Ghana Wins Hosting Rights for 2028 Olympic Boxing Qualifier

Ghana has secured the right to host the African qualification tournament for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, giving the country’s boxers a potential home advantage in their pursuit of Olympic places.
The Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF) won the hosting rights for the World Boxing African Olympic Qualification Tournament, which is provisionally scheduled to take place in Ghana in August 2027.
World Boxing formally informed the GBF that Ghana’s bid had been successful following a review by its Executive Board. The development was confirmed by the federation and reported by multiple Ghanaian media outlets.
Ghana beats Nigeria to secure Olympic qualifier
The decision represents a turnaround in the hosting process after Nigeria had previously been provisionally selected to stage the competition.
Ghana’s successful bid means the country will now prepare to welcome boxers from across Africa who will be competing for opportunities to qualify for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
The provisional competition window is August 13–22, 2027, although the final arrangements remain subject to the completion of the required host agreement.
A major opportunity for Ghanaian boxers
Hosting the qualifier could provide Ghanaian fighters with an important advantage.
Instead of travelling abroad for the continental qualification event, Ghanaian boxers will have the opportunity to compete on home soil, potentially in front of supporters and familiar surroundings.
The tournament is part of the official Olympic qualification pathway for African boxers seeking places at LA28. World Boxing’s qualification framework provides continental competitions as part of the route towards the Games.
For Ghana, the event could therefore become more than a hosting opportunity. It could provide a crucial platform for the country’s next generation of Olympic hopefuls.
World Boxing expects preparations to begin immediately
The Ghana Boxing Federation has been warned that preparations must start early.
World Boxing described the task ahead as urgent, with the organisation indicating that Ghana is only about nine months away from the proposed tournament period.
The federation is expected to work with government and other stakeholders on venue arrangements, accommodation, transportation, security, medical services and other operational requirements.
A Host City Agreement still has to be formalised, meaning some details of the tournament remain subject to final approval.
What the tournament means for African boxing
The event will bring together leading amateur boxers from across the continent as they compete for Olympic qualification opportunities.
World Boxing’s event guidelines describe the African Olympic Qualification Competition as the official qualification event for boxers from the region seeking places at Los Angeles 2028. The competition covers seven men’s and seven women’s Olympic weight categories, with quota places available across the divisions.
The tournament is therefore expected to attract athletes, coaches, officials and national federations from across Africa.
For Ghana, hosting such a competition also provides an opportunity to demonstrate its ability to stage an international sporting event while raising the profile of boxing domestically.
GBF calls for support
Ghana Boxing Federation president Dauda Fuseni has called on government, the Ghana Olympic Committee, the media and corporate organisations to support preparations for the tournament.
The federation sees the event as an opportunity to strengthen Ghana’s position within African boxing and improve the country’s prospects of sending more boxers to the 2028 Olympics.
The successful bid also comes at an important moment for Olympic boxing, with Los Angeles 2028 set to feature seven men’s and seven women’s weight categories, providing equal numbers of categories for male and female boxers.
Ghana’s Olympic boxing preparations begin now
Securing the hosting rights is only the beginning.
The GBF and its partners now face the task of ensuring that Ghana has the facilities, organisation and financial resources required to meet World Boxing’s standards.
For Ghanaian boxers, however, the significance is immediate.
If preparations are successfully completed, the country will have an opportunity to fight for Olympic qualification on home soil — potentially giving Ghana’s boxing programme one of its most important platforms ahead of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
