Brentford 3-0 Chelsea: Blues suffer another Premier League setback as defensive problems continue

Chelsea’s difficult start to the Premier League season continued as they suffered a 3-0 defeat by Brentford in a west London derby at the Gtech Community Stadium.
Jaidon Anthony opened the scoring in the second half before Igor Thiago doubled Brentford’s advantage and Fabio Carvalho completed the victory in stoppage time.
The defeat means Chelsea have now gone three Premier League matches without a win, while they have conceded 12 goals in their opening five league games. They remain without a clean sheet in the competition this season.
For Brentford, the victory extended their unbeaten start to the campaign and moved them up to third in the Premier League table, although the position remains subject to the rest of the weekend’s fixtures. The result was also their first home league victory over Chelsea since 1938.
Chelsea unable to turn possession into goals
The first half offered little indication of the final score.
Chelsea enjoyed more possession and looked the more threatening side during the opening stages, with Pedro Neto going close after nine minutes. His effort was saved by Brentford goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.
Cole Palmer also found opportunities to run at the Brentford defence, while Morgan Rogers had a shot blocked inside the penalty area.
Brentford, however, remained organised and limited Chelsea’s opportunities in front of goal.
The visitors eventually finished the match with 60% possession but managed only two shots on target. Brentford had 40% of the ball but recorded six efforts on target from 13 attempts.
That difference became significant after half-time.
Chelsea were able to control possession but struggled to create the kind of clear chances required to break Brentford down.
It was a pattern that had also been visible in Chelsea’s recent 2-2 draw with Hull City, when they scored twice but were unable to find a winning goal despite controlling long periods of the game.
Anthony breaks the deadlock
Brentford finally found a way through after 61 minutes.
Mikkel Damsgaard delivered a corner into the Chelsea penalty area and Jannik Schuster headed the ball back across goal.
Jaidon Anthony reacted quickest, heading home from close range to give Brentford the lead.
It was Anthony’s first goal for the club following his summer move from Burnley.
The goal exposed one of the weaknesses that has followed Chelsea during the early part of the season: defending set pieces.
Chelsea had worked hard to keep Brentford quiet during the opening 45 minutes, but the defensive organisation that had helped them stay in the game began to disappear after the interval.
The Blues attempted to respond, but Brentford remained comfortable.
Chelsea’s task became more difficult as they pushed additional players forward in search of an equaliser.
Thiago doubles Brentford’s lead
Brentford took advantage of the space Chelsea left behind.
In the 83rd minute, Kevin Schade broke forward and found himself through on goal. Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez saved Schade’s initial attempt, but the rebound fell to Igor Thiago.
The Brazilian striker made no mistake from close range, scoring Brentford’s second goal.
The goal effectively settled the contest.
Chelsea had enjoyed the greater share of possession but Brentford had been more effective when opportunities appeared.
That contrast was reflected in the statistics. Brentford recorded six shots on target compared with Chelsea’s two, while the Blues had 12 corners but were unable to turn that territorial advantage into a goal.
Carvalho completes the win
There was still time for Brentford to add a third.
Deep into stoppage time, Schade delivered the ball across the Chelsea penalty area after Brentford had recovered possession.
Fabio Carvalho was left unmarked at the far post and finished from close range to make it 3-0.
It was Carvalho’s first Premier League goal since returning from a lengthy injury lay-off, according to Sky Sports’ match report.
The goal completed a convincing second-half performance from the hosts.
Chelsea had competed well for much of the first half but were ultimately unable to maintain the same level after the break.
Alonso faces questions over Chelsea’s consistency
The defeat represents another difficult result for Xabi Alonso, who took charge of Chelsea during the summer.
Chelsea began the season with victories over Fulham and Brighton but have since lost to Arsenal, drawn with Hull City and now suffered a heavy defeat at Brentford.
The sequence has left Chelsea with two wins from their opening five Premier League matches. They have scored 10 goals but conceded 12.
Alonso has acknowledged that his team must become more consistent throughout matches.
After the Brentford defeat, the Chelsea manager said his players had been unable to maintain their level for the full 90 minutes and needed to improve their competitive consistency.
The comments reflect an issue that has been apparent during Chelsea’s opening matches.
Against Brighton, Chelsea established a 3-0 lead before allowing their opponents to come back into the contest, eventually winning 4-3.
Against Hull, Chelsea led early before falling behind and eventually recovering a point.
At Arsenal, Chelsea again took the lead before losing 2-1.
The Brentford match followed a different pattern, with Chelsea unable to score before conceding three times after the break.
Injuries add to Chelsea’s problems
Chelsea were also without several important players.
Joao Pedro, who had made an impressive start to his Chelsea career, missed the match through injury. Moises Caicedo was also unavailable, while captain Reece James was absent.
Danny Welbeck was handed his first Premier League start for Chelsea, while Jordan Henderson made his league debut for the club against his former side.
The absence of Caicedo was particularly significant because Chelsea have been struggling to protect their defence.
The Ecuadorian midfielder has played only a small amount of football so far this season after an injury problem, according to Reuters.
Joao Pedro’s absence was also noticeable in attack.
Chelsea had scored freely earlier in the campaign, but Brentford became the first team to prevent them from scoring in the league this season.
Brentford demonstrate the value of organisation
For Brentford, the victory was another indication of the progress made under manager Keith Andrews.
The Bees remain unbeaten in the Premier League and moved to third in the table after the win.
Their performance was based on defensive organisation, discipline and their ability to exploit Chelsea when the visitors committed players forward.
The first goal came from a set piece, the second followed a quick transition and the third came after Chelsea were unable to reorganise at the back.
That combination gave Brentford a deserved victory in a match where Chelsea had more of the ball but struggled to turn possession into meaningful chances.
What next for Chelsea?
The international break now gives Alonso and his players three weeks to work on the problems exposed during the opening five league matches.
Chelsea’s next Premier League fixture is at home to Bournemouth on 10 October.
Before then, the club will have the opportunity to assess its defensive structure, injury situation and attacking options.
The early weeks of Alonso’s tenure have produced promising moments, including wins over Fulham and Brighton, but the defeats and dropped points have highlighted how much work remains.
Chelsea’s next challenge will be turning periods of good football into consistent performances across an entire match.
Against Brentford, they managed to compete for 45 minutes but were ultimately undone after the interval.
For a side with ambitions of challenging near the top end of the Premier League, the ability to maintain concentration, defensive organisation and attacking threat for the full game will be central to their progress.
The 3-0 defeat at Brentford provides another clear indication of those areas that need attention when Chelsea return from the international break.
