Defending champions Medeama SC have returned to the top of the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League after a 1-0 victory over Aduana FC, while Hearts of Oak remain level on 17 points. Asante Kotoko were held to a 1-1 draw by FC AshantiGold 04 as the early-season title race tightened.

ACCRA — Medeama SC have regained first place in the Ghana Premier League following a narrow home victory over Aduana FC in Matchday 8.

Nana Kofi Babil scored the decisive goal in the 81st minute at the TnA Stadium in Tarkwa on Sunday, 25 October. The victory lifted Medeama to 17 points, level with Hearts of Oak but ahead on goal difference. It was an important response after Medeama suffered their first league defeat of the campaign against FC Samartex in the previous round.

Medeama respond to first defeat

Medeama entered Matchday 8 under pressure to recover after their unbeaten start ended.

Their victory over Aduana delivered three points against a direct competitor near the top of the standings.

The narrow result also underlined the importance of defensive discipline in a closely contested title race.

With Medeama and Hearts of Oak level on points, goal difference currently separates the leading pair.

Hearts of Oak keep pace

Hearts of Oak maintained their strong start with a victory over Basake Holy Stars.

Martin Karikari scored the decisive late goal, according to the Ghana News Agency.

The result temporarily moved Hearts to the top before Medeama reclaimed first place.

Both clubs have collected 17 points from their opening eight matches.

That represents an average of 2.125 points per match for each club.

Maintaining that rate over an entire season would be difficult, and it should not be interpreted as a forecast.

Kotoko held in Ashanti derby

Asante Kotoko drew 1-1 with FC AshantiGold 04 at the Len Clay Stadium.

AshantiGold took the lead shortly before half-time through a deflected long-range effort.

Kotoko equalised in the 63rd minute through Patrick Asiedu’s free-kick.

The result left Kotoko still seeking their first away league victory of the campaign.

Port City climb into third

Newly promoted Port City recorded a 2-1 away victory over Karela United.

Owusu Ansah scored twice, including an 89th-minute winner after Karela had equalised late in the match.

The result moved Port City into third place.

Their early progress is significant for a newly promoted club, although eight matches remain too small a sample to establish their likely finishing position.

Swedru All Blacks continue strong run

Swedru All Blacks defeated Young Apostles 2-1 away from home.

William Dankwah and Godfred Yartey scored before Young Apostles reduced the deficit late in the game.

The victory was All Blacks’ third consecutive league win and lifted them to 14 points.

What do the results mean for the title race?

The first eight rounds have produced a competitive contest at the top.

Medeama and Hearts of Oak are level on points, while Port City have moved into third.

The early standings suggest that established clubs cannot assume they will dominate the campaign.

However, a credible assessment of title probabilities would require more than current points totals.

Useful measures include goals scored and conceded, expected goals where available, home and away performance, strength of opponents and squad availability.

Nukunya has not obtained a complete independently reconciled Matchday 8 dataset sufficient to calculate those measures across every club.

NUKUNYA ANALYSIS

The margins are already narrow

Medeama’s return to first place illustrates how quickly league positions can change when leading teams are separated by goal difference.

Hearts of Oak remain firmly in contention, while Port City’s progress adds another dimension to the early-season competition.

For Kotoko, the inability to secure an away victory remains a concern.

The coming rounds will help establish whether Medeama and Hearts can sustain their current pace or whether other clubs can close the gap.

After eight matches, the title race remains open. The evidence supports a closely contested early season, not a definitive prediction of the eventual champion.
