Democracy Cup Trophy Tour Reaches Chief of Defence Staff Ahead of Kotoko-Hearts Clash
The Democracy Cup trophy is making its rounds. Ahead of the competition’s third edition, the trophy stopped by the office of the Chief of Defence Staff, Lieutenant General William Agyapong, in Accra on Monday.
A Parliament delegation, led by Clerk to Parliament Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, made the presentation. It’s part of a broader tour of key state institutions meant to promote national unity, democratic governance, and the role sport plays in bringing Ghanaians together.
The trophy itself will be contested by Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak on Friday, August 28, at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi. The match sits within Parliament’s wider celebrations of Ghana’s democratic journey.
Speaking at the presentation, Djietror explained the thinking behind the initiative. For him, democracy isn’t just about political processes it’s also about shared moments.
Democracy is about celebrating our victories together and sharing in the concerns around the things that bind us as a people. That is why Parliament continues to use sport as a platform to bring Ghanaians together, he said.
He pointed back to Parliament’s past sporting engagements with other institutions as proof that this isn’t a one-off gesture. Parliament is walking the talk. We have used football to engage different institutions, and this Democracy Cup has continued to create opportunities for us to interact beyond our traditional roles, he added.
Lieutenant General Agyapong welcomed the gesture, framing it as recognition of the military’s role in safeguarding Ghana’s democratic system.
Democracy thrives where there is peace, justice, equality, respect for the law and where people abide by law and order. As a military, we will continue to reaffirm our commitment to the Constitution and to maintaining the territorial integrity of Ghana, he said.
He also confirmed that Armed Forces personnel will be present at Baba Yara Stadium on Friday, even if they won’t be easy to spot.
We will be at the stadium. You may not see us in numbers or in uniform because we also want to enjoy the game like every other Ghanaian, but we will be there to support this very noble initiative, Agyapong said.
The tour isn’t done yet. Over the coming week, the trophy will visit the National Commission for Civic Education, Ghana Police Service, Ghana Armed Forces, Judicial Service, Electoral Commission, Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice, and the Office of the President.
It all builds toward Friday, when Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko renew one of Ghana’s fiercest football rivalries in Kumasi with the Democracy Cup, and bragging rights, on the line.
