Ghanaians living in the UK, US, Canada and eight other countries can now begin the Ghana Card replacement process online without travelling to Ghana.

ACCRA, Ghana — October 26, 2026 — Ghanaians living abroad who need to replace a lost, damaged or defaced Ghana Card can now access an online replacement service introduced by the National Identification Authority (NIA).

The service is currently available to Ghanaians in 11 countries, providing an important new digital option for members of the Ghanaian diaspora who previously faced the inconvenience and expense of travelling to Ghana to deal with identity-card issues.

The countries currently covered are the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Netherlands, Spain, United Arab Emirates, France, Italy, Belgium, Germany and Denmark, according to information announced by the NIA’s Executive Secretary, Wisdom Koku Deku.

Ghana Card replacement now easier for Ghanaians abroad

The new service is particularly significant for Ghanaians who have lost their cards while living overseas or whose cards have become damaged and need to be replaced.

Previously, card-related services could require applicants to visit an NIA office or Ghanaian mission and complete the necessary identification and biometric procedures.

The online service gives eligible Ghanaians abroad another route to begin the replacement process, reducing the need for unnecessary travel.

The development forms part of a broader move by Ghana’s identity authority to expand digital access to national identification services.

Which countries are covered?

The NIA’s current online replacement service is available to Ghanaians living in:

  • United Kingdom
  • United States
  • Canada
  • Netherlands
  • Spain
  • United Arab Emirates
  • France
  • Italy
  • Belgium
  • Germany
  • Denmark

For Ghanaians living in these countries, the service provides a more convenient way to initiate a replacement request.

The NIA has indicated that its digital services are being expanded, with an online update service expected to be introduced in the future.

What happens if your Ghana Card is lost or stolen?

The NIA’s official replacement guidance states that applicants whose cards have been lost or stolen must report the incident to the police and obtain a Police Extract.

For a damaged or defaced card, the damaged card must normally be presented together with the police documentation.

The replacement process involves verification of the supporting documents, approval of the request and biometric authentication before a replacement card is issued.

The NIA’s guidance also makes clear that replacement requests require the applicant’s participation and cannot simply be completed by another person on their behalf.

How much does Ghana Card replacement cost abroad?

The NIA’s approved 2026 fees list the cost of Ghana Card replacement for Ghanaians living outside Ghana as:

  • US$55 equivalent in the ECOWAS region
  • US$75 equivalent in the rest of Africa
  • US$115 equivalent in countries outside Africa

The same schedule lists GH¢200 for replacement at an NIA district office in Ghana and GH¢520 at an NIA Premium Centre.

For Ghanaians in the United Kingdom, United States, Canada and the other non-African countries covered by the new online service, the applicable overseas fee is therefore the cedi equivalent of US$115, subject to the NIA’s current payment arrangements.

Why the development matters to the Ghanaian diaspora

The Ghana Card has become increasingly important for Ghanaians dealing with financial, government and identity-related services in Ghana.

Making replacement services more accessible overseas could therefore reduce one of the frustrations faced by members of the diaspora who maintain strong personal, financial and family connections to Ghana.

It also comes as Ghana continues to expand its digital identity infrastructure.

According to the latest NIA statistics, more than 20.4 million Ghanaians had been enrolled in the national identification system by October 16, 2026, while more than 19.3 million cards had been issued. The authority also reported more than 756,000 card replacements.

Ghana strengthens digital services for citizens overseas

The online Ghana Card replacement service is part of a wider effort to make government services more accessible to Ghanaians outside the country.

The development also fits into broader government efforts to strengthen consular and administrative support for the diaspora.

The Foreign Affairs Ministry has separately announced plans for a Ghanaian Diaspora Consular Fund designed to provide emergency support to citizens facing distress abroad.

The combination of digital identity services and expanded consular support could make it easier for Ghanaians abroad to maintain their official links with Ghana without having to travel unnecessarily.

What Ghanaians abroad should know

Ghanaians living in the 11 countries covered by the new service should use official NIA channels when applying for a replacement and should be cautious about third parties offering to process Ghana Card applications for additional fees.

The NIA’s official website provides information on Ghana Card services, replacement requirements, fees and other identity-related services.

The authority has also warned that Ghana Card identity verification is increasingly being conducted through biometric systems, with new regulations introduced in 2026 to strengthen identity security and reduce misuse of copies of the card.
