Donor-Funded ARVs Cleared From Port, Head to Health Facilities Nationwide
Ghana’s stock of antiretroviral drugs (ARVs) has finally cleared port. The medicines are now at the Central Medical Stores, being readied for distribution to the regions.
From there, they’ll move down to districts and health facilities across the country.
The clearance comes after weeks of mounting concern. The donor-funded medicines had been stuck at the port, and their delay raised fears of a possible ARV shortage at facilities nationwide.
People living with HIV and health-sector stakeholders had been sounding the alarm.
NAP+ Ghana was among the loudest voices. The group, alongside other stakeholders, had called on government to step in urgently and prevent a shortage of what are, quite literally, life-saving medicines.
For anyone on antiretroviral treatment, consistency is everything. Even short interruptions can affect how well the treatment works. That’s what made the delay so worrying for patients and healthcare providers alike.
Now that the clearance process is done, attention turns to distribution. The medicines are expected to move from the Central Medical Stores out to health facilities in the coming days.
For patients across the country, getting these drugs into facilities on time will be key to keeping their treatment on track without disruption.
