Graphic Journalist Assault Case: Police Investigate Alleged Assault on Graphic Employee by Officers in Teshie

The Graphic journalist assault case has sparked nationwide concern after the Ghana Police Service launched an investigation into allegations that Graphic Communications Group employee Aliu Mahama was assaulted by police officers after being mistaken for an armed robbery suspect in Teshie, Accra.

The incident, involving Aliu Mahama, has sparked renewed public debate about police accountability, the use of force during arrests, and the treatment of civilians by law enforcement officers.

According to the Accra Regional Police Command, Mahama formally lodged a complaint on July 14, 2026, after allegedly being assaulted by officers believed to be attached to the Nungua Police Station.

Police confirmed that he reported the incident with visible injuries, prompting the Nungua District Police Command to begin investigations.

Police Investigate Alleged Assault on Graphic Journalist After Teshie Incident

Mahama, who works with the Transport Unit of Graphic Communications Group, said the incident occurred around 10 p.m. on Monday, July 13, when he stepped out to buy kenkey for his children at GREDA Estate in Teshie.

According to his account, he was standing outside his house while calling his children to collect the food when a white Toyota pickup vehicle approached.

He alleged that several men dressed in black suddenly jumped out of the vehicle and ordered him to lie on the ground before accusing him of being an armed robbery suspect.

Mahama said that before he could explain himself, one of the men struck him on the head with a stick, causing him to fall.

He further alleged that the officers threatened to shoot him if he failed to cooperate, with one officer reportedly cocking a firearm during the encounter.

Despite repeatedly telling the officers that they had arrested the wrong person and asking them to accompany him to his nearby home so his family and neighbours could identify him, Mahama said his pleas were ignored.

Instead, he was handcuffed and placed inside the vehicle.

Graphic Journalist Assault Victim Recounts What Happened

Mahama claimed the officers continued assaulting him while transporting him from the scene.

According to him, the vehicle later stopped at Zongo Junction, where he remained handcuffed for several hours as officers carried out checks on passing taxis.

He alleged that every attempt to explain his identity resulted in further slaps and physical assault.

Mahama further claimed that after arriving at the Nungua Police Station, officers ordered him to lie on the ground before kicking and beating him with what he described as a metal object across different parts of his body.

He said his brother later arrived at the station after police contacted his family, while a female officer eventually intervened after listening to his explanation.

Mahama also stated that when he later returned to file a complaint, he was able to identify some of the officers he believed participated in the alleged assault.

Medical Report Reveals Injuries After Graphic Journalist Assault

Medical personnel at Graphic Communications Group later examined Mahama following the incident.

According to Resident Medical Officer Dr. Jacqui Barnes, he complained of headaches, pain in both eyes and general body pains.

The examination reportedly found swelling around both eyes, bleeding in both eyes—with the left eye more severely affected—as well as bruises and haematomas on both thighs.

Doctors also identified a swelling on his scalp, which Mahama said was where he had been struck with a stick.

He was prescribed medication, including eye treatment, pain relievers and muscle relaxants, while doctors continued monitoring his recovery.

Police Investigate Alleged Assault on Graphic Journalist as Inquiry Begins

The Ghana Police Service says it is treating the allegations seriously.

In a statement issued on Friday, July 17, the Accra Regional Police Command confirmed that preliminary investigations had begun.

Investigators have already taken Mahama’s statement and issued him with a medical report form to support the investigation.

Police also confirmed that efforts are underway to identify all officers allegedly involved.

The Service said any officer found responsible would face the appropriate disciplinary or legal action in accordance with the law and the Police Service’s disciplinary procedures.

The incident has renewed calls for greater accountability within Ghana’s law enforcement agencies and has raised concerns about the treatment of civilians and media workers during police operations.
