Real Madrid Turn to Jose Mourinho in Bid to End Trophy Drought
The Portuguese manager returns to the Bernabéu on a three-year deal as Real Madrid seek to restore authority, stability and success after two consecutive seasons without major silverware.
MADRID — Real Madrid have turned to former manager Jose Mourinho in an attempt to revive the club after two consecutive trophyless seasons, handing the Portuguese coach a three-year contract that will keep him at the Santiago Bernabéu until 2029. The 63-year-old returns to Madrid more than a decade after his first spell in charge, replacing Álvaro Arbeloa and inheriting a squad facing mounting scrutiny after a disappointing campaign that saw the club lose the La Liga title to Barcelona and exit the UEFA Champions League in the quarter-finals.
Mourinho’s appointment remains subject to the outcome of Real Madrid’s presidential election on 7 June, although incumbent president Florentino Pérez is widely expected to secure another term and formally unveil the Portuguese coach shortly afterwards. The decision represents one of the biggest managerial gambles in European football. Pérez is understood to believe Mourinho is the figure best placed to restore discipline, authority and identity to a club that has endured growing tensions both on and off the pitch. Analysts close to the club describe Real Madrid’s leadership as seeking not only a coach but also a commanding figure capable of re-establishing control within a dressing room that has come under increasing pressure.
Why Mourinho?
Real Madrid’s hierarchy believe Mourinho’s experience, personality and record of delivering success under pressure make him uniquely qualified to oversee a rebuilding project. During his first spell between 2010 and 2013, Mourinho won La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup. Statistics compiled by BBC Sport show he achieved a 76.3% win rate at Real Madrid — the highest of his managerial career — and guided the club to a then-record 100-point La Liga title-winning campaign in 2011-12. His return comes as Madrid seek a response to two seasons that have fallen short of expectations despite boasting one of the most talented squads in world football.
Vinicius and Mbappe Among Key Challenges
Among Mourinho’s most immediate tests will be managing a dressing room packed with elite talent and strong personalities, including Vinicius Junior and Kylian Mbappé. Particular attention will focus on Mourinho’s relationship with Vinicius after controversy surrounding comments he made following Real Madrid’s Champions League meeting with Benfica earlier this year. During that match, Vinicius reported an alleged racist incident involving Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni. The allegation was denied, and UEFA later concluded there was insufficient evidence to substantiate claims of racist abuse, although Prestianni was sanctioned for a separate homophobic insult.
Mourinho faced criticism after suggesting Vinicius’ goal celebration had contributed to rising tensions inside the stadium. Critics accused him of diverting attention from the allegations raised by the Brazilian forward. Mourinho defended his comments at the time, saying he wanted to remain balanced while the facts were established. How Mourinho manages his relationship with Vinicius, while integrating a squad built around some of football’s biggest stars, is expected to become one of the defining themes of his second spell in charge.
High Expectations, High Risk

Mourinho’s arrival is likely to energise sections of the Real Madrid fan base who remember a manager capable of challenging Barcelona’s dominance and delivering silverware.
Yet his return also carries risks.
His first tenure ended amid tensions within the club, and some observers question whether his confrontational leadership style remains suited to the modern game. Others argue that the very qualities that once made Mourinho successful are precisely what Madrid need at a time of uncertainty. For Pérez and the Real Madrid hierarchy, the calculation appears straightforward: the club needs immediate results and a restoration of authority. Mourinho now faces the challenge of proving that his methods can once again deliver success at one of football’s most demanding institutions. His second spell begins with expectations of an immediate return to title contention as Real Madrid seek to avoid a third consecutive season without major silverware.
