Teacher Arrested After Viral Assault Video Sparks Safeguarding Concerns at Nyinahin Catholic SHS

Police say a teacher has been arrested after a video appearing to show the assault of a female student at Nyinahin Catholic Senior High School circulated widely on social media, prompting investigations by both law enforcement and education authorities.

The Ashanti Regional Police Command has arrested a teacher at Nyinahin Catholic Senior High School in connection with an alleged assault on an 18-year-old female student captured in a widely circulated video. According to police, the suspect, identified as 39-year-old Eric Buernortey Apaflo, was arrested on June 8 following reports of the incident.

Police said preliminary investigations suggest the suspect, who reportedly serves as a caretaker at the school’s hostel, confronted the student and several male students over alleged misconduct. Authorities say the confrontation escalated, resulting in the alleged assault.

The incident has attracted national attention after footage circulated on social media appearing to show a male adult physically restraining and striking a young woman while bystanders pleaded for the confrontation to stop. Reports indicate the video sparked public outrage and renewed debate about student welfare and disciplinary practices in educational institutions.

The Ghana Police Service said a medical report form has been issued to the student, identified by authorities as Patience Chibu, to facilitate medical examination and treatment. The suspect remains in police custody while investigations continue.

Police also stated that tensions developed following the incident, with some students allegedly reacting angrily and attempting to confront the suspect before officers intervened to restore calm.

Separate reports indicate that the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the Ashanti Regional Education Directorate have opened investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Education officials are expected to determine whether disciplinary action or additional safeguarding measures may be required.

In an earlier report, education authorities said both the student and the teacher were undergoing medical examinations while investigations were underway.

The police have urged the public to remain calm and allow lawful processes to take their course. Authorities say investigations remain active and that any further legal action will depend on the outcome of those inquiries.

The case has intensified broader discussions about safeguarding, conflict resolution and the use of force in schools. Child rights advocates and education stakeholders have increasingly called for stronger protection mechanisms, clearer disciplinary procedures and greater emphasis on de-escalation practices within educational settings.
