Police investigate suspected foul play after woman’s body found in Somanya

Police have launched an investigation after the body of an unidentified woman was discovered in a bush near Somanya in Ghana’s Eastern Region. Investigators say preliminary findings point to possible foul play, although the cause of death will be determined through an autopsy.

SOMANYA, Ghana — Police in Ghana’s Eastern Region have launched an investigation after the body of an unidentified woman was discovered in a bush near Brigade, a suburb of Somanya, with investigators saying preliminary findings suggest possible foul play.

According to the Somanya District Police Command, residents alerted authorities after noticing a strong odour coming from nearby vegetation, leading officers to the scene on Thursday. Police say the body is believed to be that of a woman aged between 30 and 40 years.

ASP Nana Akomeah, the Somanya District Police Commander, said officers found the body in an advanced state of decomposition, making immediate identification impossible. He said investigators suspect foul play based on observations made at the scene but stressed that the exact cause and circumstances of death would be established through further forensic examinations, including an autopsy.

Police reviewing missing persons reports

Investigators have begun reviewing station records and missing persons reports to establish the woman’s identity. ASP Akomeah said police believe the body may have remained at the location for approximately three weeks before it was discovered. During the review, officers contacted a man who had reported his wife missing on 17 June. However, after viewing the body at the Yilo Krobo District Hospital mortuary, he confirmed that the deceased was not his wife.

Police have also contacted the management of the University of Environment and Sustainable Development (UESD) regarding a reported missing student. Owing to the advanced state of decomposition, the university has not been able to determine whether the deceased is the missing student.

Autopsy expected to guide investigation

The body has been deposited at the Yilo Krobo District Hospital mortuary, where an autopsy is expected to determine the cause of death and assist investigators in establishing the circumstances surrounding the case. Police say they will continue gathering forensic and investigative evidence before drawing conclusions about how the woman died.

The public was asked to assist

ASP Akomeah appealed to members of the public to report any missing persons or suspicious activity that could assist the investigation. He also said police would work with the Environmental Protection Agency and other relevant agencies to ensure the affected area is managed appropriately following the discovery.

Authorities have not released further details about the deceased, and no arrests had been announced at the time of publication.

Who to contact if someone is missing

Police encourage anyone searching for a missing relative or with information that could assist investigators to report to the nearest police station or contact the Ghana Police Service.

Why this matters

Identifying unidentified victims is often one of the most challenging aspects of criminal investigations. Police rely on forensic examinations, missing persons reports and public assistance to establish identities and determine the circumstances surrounding suspicious deaths. Authorities say the findings of the post-mortem examination will be critical to the next stage of the investigation.
