Dennis Miracles Aboagye, thanks Accra supporters after EOCO bail, says, ‘We are now family.’

The former government official visited several Accra communities to thank residents who rallied behind him following his arrest, as investigations by the Economic and Organised Crime Office continue.

ACCRA, Ghana — Dennis Miracles Aboagye, an aide to former Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has begun visiting several informal communities across Accra to thank residents who publicly supported him following his arrest and subsequent bail by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

The visits come just over a week after Aboagye was arrested by officers of the Ghana Immigration Service at Kotoka International Airport upon his return from an overseas trip before being transferred to EOCO for questioning as part of an investigation into alleged procurement and financial irregularities.

EOCO is investigating allegations involving approximately GH¢55 million linked to Aboagye’s tenure as Executive Secretary of the Inter-Ministerial Coordinating Committee on Decentralisation. He has not been charged with any criminal offence and has consistently denied wrongdoing, maintaining that all decisions taken during his time in office complied with established legal and procurement procedures.

The investigation has attracted significant public and political attention, with supporters of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) staging demonstrations outside EOCO’s headquarters following his arrest and campaigning publicly for his release.

‘Your support meant a lot.’

Speaking during one of the visits, Aboagye said he had been deeply moved by the support shown by people he had never previously met.

“I came to thank all of you. I saw the love and support you showed me when I came out. Most of you I had never met before, but your support meant a lot.”

He said he felt compelled to personally express his appreciation rather than relying on public statements or social media messages.

Aboagye told residents that the solidarity shown during what he described as a difficult period had created a lasting bond between him and the communities.

“If not for you, I may still have been in custody. After today, we are now family. I will never forget you.”

The remarks have since circulated widely across social media platforms, generating renewed public discussion about the investigation and the political support surrounding the former government official.

Bail granted as investigation continues

Following several days in EOCO custody, Aboagye was granted bail in the sum of GH¢50 million with three sureties while investigations continue. At the time of publication, EOCO had not announced any criminal charges against him. The agency has previously indicated that enquiries into the alleged financial and procurement-related irregularities remain ongoing. Under Ghana’s legal system, investigations may continue after a suspect has been granted bail, and bail does not constitute a finding on the merits of a case.
