Afenyo-Markin Calls for Calm as Land Dispute Leaves 3 Dead in Central Region
Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin is calling for peace after a violent land dispute in the Central Region turned deadly. Three people have died and at least 15 others were injured in clashes between the Efutu and Gomoa communities.
According to the Ghana Police Service, the trouble began in the early hours of Tuesday, when armed individuals from three Gomoa communities Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Pomadze, and Gomoa Yenkuadze allegedly attacked residents of New Winneba, a newly developed settlement.
At the heart of the conflict is a disputed piece of land. The attackers are said to be laying claim to the exact land on which New Winneba now sits. During the confrontation, several shops and properties belonging to residents were reportedly destroyed.
Speaking on radio, Afenyo-Markin appealed directly to both the Gomoa and Efutu communities to step back from the brink and work toward restoring calm. His message leaned heavily on shared history he reminded both sides that they’re bound by deep historical and cultural ties, and urged them not to let a new conflict undo a relationship built over generations.
“Efutu and Gomoa were not built on violence,” he said, calling on everyone involved to choose dialogue over confrontation.
Concerns about the Fetu Afahye celebrations
Timing adds another layer of urgency here. Afenyo-Markin specifically flagged the upcoming Oguaa Fetu Afahye celebrations, warning that if the tensions aren’t addressed quickly, they risk spilling over and disrupting the festivities entirely.
Beyond the two communities directly involved, Afenyo-Markin extended his appeal to residents and stakeholders across the entire Central Region, urging everyone to stay calm and support a peaceful resolution to the dispute.
His closing message was one of unity that dialogue and harmonious relations between Gomoa and Efutu remain essential, not just for resolving this particular conflict, but for preserving peace and stability across the region going forward.
