NER: Security Forces Arrest 2 Over 118 Bags of Cocoa Hidden Under Plantains
A joint security operation in the North East Region has led to the arrest of two suspects after 118 bags of cocoa beans were allegedly found concealed beneath a load of plantains on a truck along the Bunkpurugu border road.
The operation was conducted at about 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, August 9, 2026, following intelligence provided by the North East Regional National Security Coordinator, Ernest Bawanin Guat.
A multi-agency task force involving the Ghana Police Service, Ghana Immigration Service, Defence Intelligence, the National Security/Signal Bureau and the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) carried out the operation.
Cocoa Found Hidden Under Plantains
The security team intercepted a Hyundai truck with registration number AS-3272-25, which was reportedly transporting plantains.
A search conducted at the Customs office, however, uncovered 118 bags of cocoa beans concealed underneath the plantains.
The operation was spearheaded by ACI Edwin Adejetey Doku, Immigration Commander for the Bunkpurugu-Nakpaduri District.
The intercepted cocoa beans have an estimated total weight of 11,800 kilograms and have been secured by the Customs Division of the GRA.
Two Suspects Arrested
Two people have been arrested in connection with the interception.
They have been identified as 23-year-old Ernestina Akugre and 19-year-old Mohammed Mumin.
The two suspects are currently in police custody and are assisting investigators as authorities work to establish the circumstances surrounding the concealment and intended movement of the cocoa beans.
The joint operation highlights continued efforts by Ghana’s security agencies to monitor the movement of commodities and prevent illegal activities along the country’s borders.
