UAE Donates $1 Million in Relief Items to Support Ghana’s Flood Victims
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has provided relief items worth US$1 million to support Ghana’s response to the devastating June 29 floods that affected communities across parts of the country.
The assistance was received on behalf of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) by Alhaji Baba Seidu Issifu, Minister of State in charge of Climate Change and Sustainability, as efforts continue to provide support to households affected by the disaster.
The June 29 floods caused significant destruction in parts of southern Ghana, particularly in the Greater Accra Region, damaging homes, businesses, roads and other infrastructure and leaving thousands of people in need of assistance.
UAE Relief Supports Affected Families
The latest UAE intervention includes essential food supplies and emergency shelter materials intended to support families whose homes and livelihoods were affected by the floods.
NADMO has been coordinating the distribution of relief items, including food and shelter materials, to communities affected by the disaster.
The UAE support adds to assistance from international partners, Ghanaian businesses, faith-based organisations and other institutions that have contributed to the country’s humanitarian response.
The UAE had earlier expressed solidarity with Ghana following the floods, with its Ministry of Foreign Affairs conveying condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the disaster.
Calls for NADMO to Be Retooled
Speaking on the relief efforts, Alhaji Baba Seidu Issifu said the immediate assistance being provided to affected families was important, but the recurrence and scale of disasters highlighted the need to strengthen Ghana’s disaster management system.
He called for the retooling of NADMO to improve its capacity to respond to emergencies and strengthen disaster preparedness across the country.
NADMO Director-General Nana Agyeman Prempeh said the organisation had received adequate relief items since the June 29 disaster and was working to distribute them to affected communities.
According to him, the supplies received so far are sufficient to support victims requiring immediate assistance. However, he stressed that NADMO needs greater logistical capacity to respond effectively to future emergencies.
NADMO Appeals for Emergency Equipment
Nana Agyeman Prempeh called for additional equipment, including bulldozers, excavators and trucks, to strengthen the organisation’s ability to respond to disasters and carry out preparedness operations.
The appeal comes as authorities continue to assess the challenges exposed by the June 29 floods and work to improve Ghana’s capacity to respond to future emergencies.
The latest assistance further strengthens humanitarian cooperation between Ghana and the UAE while providing immediate support to families recovering from the impact of the floods.
