Deputy Roads Minister Urges Contractor to Fast-Track Mankessim Bypass
Work on the Mankessim Bypass isn’t moving as quickly as government would like, and Deputy Minister for Roads and Highways Alhassan Sayibu Suhuyini made that clear during a site inspection this week.
Speaking to the media after touring the site on Wednesday, September 16, Suhuyini didn’t hide his dissatisfaction with the current pace of construction, calling on contractor Mo and Mo Limited to pick things up.
We want to urge the contractor on this project, Mo and Mo, to fast-track the work. We are not too happy that it is not on schedule, he said.
Even with the project running behind, Suhuyini said government still believes the contractor has what it takes to turn things around. His suggestion was practical work closely with the regional representative to put together a plan for ramping up activity and getting back on track.
We have every confidence in his capacity to ramp up activities and so we will hope that working together with our regional representative, they will come up with a programme that can ramp up activities to bring the project back on schedule, he added.
On a more positive note, the Deputy Minister was complimentary about the technical planning behind the project. After hearing the project team walk through the design, he came away convinced that serious thought had gone into it.
Listening to Mr Okoto explain the whole design, it tells you that a lot of thinking went into this proposal, he said.
Once completed, he believes the bypass will stand as a major infrastructure achievement and a showcase of the engineering capability Ghana has built up over the years.
Suhuyini also touched on how local residents have responded to the project. Following government’s engagement with opinion leaders in Mankessim, he said people now better understand why the bypass matters particularly with the planned dualisation heading toward Mankessim.
We are happy with the level of support that we have been enjoying from the community since after that meeting, he said.
He reassured residents that the whole point of the project is to improve daily life in Mankessim and the surrounding communities, while also making travel easier for motorists using the corridor.
The focus and purpose of this project is to make life better, to improve the community of Mankessim and the people in that area and also to give better transport experience to people on this corridor, he said.
