Deputy Finance Minister Cuts Sod for Somanya–Dodowa Road Construction
Deputy Finance Minister and MP for Asuogyaman, Thomas Ampem Nyarko, joined the MP for Yilo Krobo to officially break ground on the Somanya–Dodowa Road and several inner roads within the municipality.
The road network in Yilo Krobo has long been in rough shape, and this project is aimed squarely at fixing that. Beyond just smoother travel, the roads are expected to boost economic activity and improve connectivity between Somanya and surrounding communities.
Speaking at the ceremony, Ampem Nyarko didn’t mince words when addressing the contractors handling the work. His message was clear: no shortcuts, no shoddy work the projects need to meet required standards from start to finish.
He explained that under government’s Big Push policy, contractors get paid promptly, typically within three months of submitting their certificates. But that quick turnaround comes with an expectation of accountability, which is why he encouraged residents to keep a close eye on the construction as it progresses.
His message to the community was direct too if the quality of work ever falls short, residents have every right to question the contractor about it.
Ampem Nyarko also gave assurances on the financial side, promising that the Ministry of Finance would release funds promptly to keep the project moving smoothly and on schedule.
Yilo Krobo Municipal Chief Executive Francis Akumatey credited the municipality’s progress partly to having several of its own citizens serving in government connections he said have helped in lobbying for more development projects locally. According to him, Yilo Krobo is gradually receiving its fair share of the national development agenda.
Eastern Regional Minister Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey acknowledged just how bad the road situation has been across much of the municipality. She also credited Presidential Advisor on the Economy, Seth Terkper, for his role in helping Yilo Krobo secure significant development projects. Looking ahead, she expressed confidence that once completed, these roads would improve transportation, support agriculture, and give a broader boost to economic activity in the area.
For Yilo Krobo MP Albert Tetteh Nyarkotey, this groundbreaking carries personal significance. He said the project delivers on a promise he made to voters during the 2024 election campaign a pledge to lobby for the reconstruction of the municipality’s deteriorating roads if elected.
The Paramount Chief of the Yilo Krobo Traditional Area, Oklepeme Nuer Anorbah Sasraku, offered his full support to both the MP and the contractor, pledging the traditional authority’s backing to see the projects through to completion. He also called for continued collaboration between traditional leadership and government to keep pushing development forward in the area.
The Somanya–Dodowa Road project is being welcomed as a much-needed intervention, one expected to strengthen connectivity and contribute meaningfully to Yilo Krobo’s socio-economic growth. For now, residents are hopeful the work stays on schedule and delivers the lasting benefits communities across the municipality have been waiting for.
