Freezy Macbones Wins WBO Africa Light Heavyweight Title in Lagos

Ghanaian boxer Seth “Freezy Macbones” Gyimah has captured the WBO Africa Light Heavyweight title after defeating Nigeria’s Godday “Zodsolo” Appah in Lagos.
Ghanaian boxing celebrated a major victory as Seth “Freezy Macbones” Gyimah defeated Nigerian champion Godday “Zodsolo” Appah to become the new WBO Africa Light Heavyweight champion.
The championship fight took place at The Balmoral in Lagos on Thursday, October 1, as part of the “Chaos in the Ring” boxing event held around Nigeria’s Independence Day celebrations.
Macbones secured the championship by majority decision, with two judges scoring the contest 95-93 in his favour while the third scored it 94-94.
Macbones makes strong start
The Ghanaian made an explosive start to the contest, flooring Appah during the opening round and immediately putting the Nigerian on the defensive.
Macbones continued to control the early stages, landing cleaner punches and dictating the pace through the second and third rounds.
Appah responded during the middle rounds and enjoyed his strongest period of the fight, particularly with the support of the home crowd.
Macbones, however, regained his composure in the closing rounds and finished strongly to secure the continental championship.
Major milestone for Ghanaian boxing
The victory represents an important milestone in Macbones’ professional career.
The 37-year-old only began boxing at the age of 27, making his rise to continental championship level an unusual journey in professional boxing.
His victory in Lagos also adds another chapter to the long-running Ghana-Nigeria sporting rivalry, with the Ghanaian claiming the title on Nigerian soil.
According to Ghana News Agency, Macbones is expected to return to the ring in December, with another Nigerian opponent potentially lined up for his first title defence.
A new opportunity on the African boxing scene
The WBO Africa title gives Macbones a significant platform as he looks to establish himself among the leading fighters in the African light heavyweight division.
His victory over Appah could also create opportunities for larger international fights as he continues his professional career.
For Ghanaian boxing fans, the Lagos victory provides a major sporting headline at the start of October and puts Macbones firmly back in the spotlight.
