KYIV, Ukraine— A Russian airstrike has damaged Kyiv’s Northern Bridge, forcing authorities to suspend traffic across the major Dnipro River crossing as attacks on infrastructure intensify in the Ukrainian capital.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said the strike damaged sections of the road surface and overhead trolleybus cables. Emergency services were sent to the area.

No casualties were immediately reported.

Northern Bridge hit during latest attack

The Northern Bridge is one of the key crossings connecting the eastern and western parts of Kyiv.

Following the attack, authorities blocked traffic travelling from the eastern bank towards the western side of the capital.

The closure added to existing transport disruption after another major bridge, the Southern Bridge, was targeted in previous attacks.

The continuing disruption has created heavy congestion as commuters search for alternative routes across the Dnipro.

Kyiv’s bridges become targets

The Northern Bridge attack follows a series of strikes affecting Kyiv’s major river crossings.

The Southern Bridge was targeted repeatedly by drones, resulting in restrictions on traffic.

Other bridges have also experienced partial or temporary closures as authorities respond to the attacks.

The developments have created significant difficulties for people travelling between the two sides of the capital.

More than one-third of Kyiv’s approximately three million residents lived on the eastern side of the Dnipro before Russia’s full-scale invasion, while many people work on the western side, where government institutions and businesses are concentrated.

Growing pressure on Kyiv infrastructure

The attacks come after a wider wave of Russian strikes against Ukrainian infrastructure.

On September 30, a major Russian air assault targeted energy infrastructure around Kyiv and other regions, causing casualties and power disruptions.

Ukrainian authorities have warned that the country could face further attacks against energy facilities as winter approaches.

The latest attacks on transport infrastructure add another challenge for a city already preparing for potential winter disruption.

Russia says military targets are being attacked

Russia has repeatedly said that its military operations target military or strategically important facilities rather than civilians.

Ukrainian authorities have accused Russia of deliberately attacking civilian and critical infrastructure.

The competing claims remain part of the wider information battle surrounding the war, while the physical damage to Kyiv’s infrastructure continues to affect daily life.

Traffic disruption spreads across the capital

The closure of major bridges has forced residents to find alternative routes across Kyiv.

Long queues have developed on roads as commuters attempt to use the crossings that remain open.

Public transport has also been affected by damage to trolleybus infrastructure.

Officials are working to assess the damage and determine when the Northern Bridge can safely reopen.

Ukraine prepares for winter attacks

The latest strike comes as Ukrainian authorities prepare for another difficult winter.

Energy infrastructure has previously been targeted extensively during the conflict, leading to electricity and heating disruptions.

Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities are strengthening contingency plans and seeking additional air-defence capabilities to protect critical infrastructure.

Ukraine has also continued to receive military assistance from international partners.

Conflict remains unresolved

The latest attack highlights the continuing intensity of the Russia-Ukraine war more than four years after Russia launched its full-scale invasion.

Fighting continues along the front line while both countries conduct long-range drone and missile operations.

Ukraine has also continued attacks against Russian military and industrial targets.

The latest developments indicate that infrastructure and logistics remain central to the wider conflict.

For Kyiv residents, however, the immediate concern is restoring transport links and maintaining essential services as the city faces continued security threats.
