Rahim Ibrahim Receives Late Black Stars Invitation for AFCON Qualifiers
Rahim Ibrahim’s rise just took another major step forward. The Ghana midfielder has earned his first senior Black Stars call-up, receiving a late invitation to join Carlos Queiroz’s squad ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The 25-year-old Slovan Bratislava midfielder has been rewarded for a genuinely impressive stretch of form in Slovakia, capped off by a breakthrough campaign in the UEFA Champions League.
Ibrahim made his league-phase debut in the competition earlier this month when Slovan Bratislava travelled to face Paris Saint-Germain at the Parc des Princes. He started the match and played 59 minutes, though Slovan came away with a heavy 6-1 defeat against the reigning European champions.
His Champions League involvement wasn’t limited to that one appearance, though. Ibrahim featured in all six of Slovan Bratislava’s qualifying matches as the club worked its way into the competition’s group stage a run that clearly caught the attention of Ghana’s coaching staff.
This call-up marks another significant milestone in a journey that began at Accra Lions. Ibrahim made the move to Slovakia in 2020, joining AS Trenčín to continue developing his game, before switching to Slovan Bratislava in 2025.
Since arriving at Slovan, he’s become an increasingly important part of the squad, progressing steadily from Ghanaian domestic football all the way to one of the biggest stages in European club football.
Ibrahim’s inclusion is just one of several late changes to Queiroz’s squad ahead of these crucial qualifiers. Brandon Thomas-Asante was called up after Prince Kwabena Adu was ruled out through injury, while Mohammed Fuseini received his own invitation following Mohammed Kudus’s decision to withdraw as he continues his recovery.
There’s also been an unwanted addition to the injury list Lorient defender Nathaniel Adjei has been forced to pull out after suffering a hamstring injury during his club’s 2-1 defeat to Le Mans.
Ibrahim now joins the squad as Ghana prepares to launch its 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign. The Black Stars travel to Bouaké to face Côte d’Ivoire on September 24, before returning home to host The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium on September 29.
A friendly against Morocco follows on October 4, rounding out a busy international window.
For Ibrahim, this moment represents a striking rise from Accra Lions to European football, then onto the Champions League stage, and now his first senior call-up to the Ghana national team. He’ll be hoping to seize this opportunity and stake his claim as another genuine option in Queiroz’s midfield as the Black Stars begin their latest push for continental qualification.
