Mohammed Fuseini Earns Late Ghana Call-Up Ahead of Crucial Fixtures
Mohammed Fuseini is heading back into the Black Stars fold, earning a late call-up ahead of a demanding international window that includes crucial AFCON qualifiers against Ivory Coast and Gambia, plus a friendly against Morocco.
The Derby County forward’s inclusion comes down to circumstances elsewhere in the squad. Tottenham midfielder Mohammed Kudus has withdrawn from this window as he continues managing his recovery, having only recently returned to action following a lengthy seven-month injury layoff. He’s reportedly prioritising full fitness before jumping back into national team duty.
There’s also uncertainty surrounding Prince Adu Kwabena, who’s now a doubt after picking up a head injury during Viktoria Plzen’s clash with Slavia Prague over the weekend. He was stretchered off during that match and is set for further medical assessment before any decision is made on his availability.
With those two attacking options in question, Carlos Queiroz turned to Fuseini to fill the gap and give the squad another option up front.
This marks Fuseini’s first call-up in over a year, since making his Ghana debut at the 2025 Unity Cup in London. That tournament gave a glimpse of his potential he came off the bench against Nigeria before earning his first start against Trinidad and Tobago, a match he made count by scoring in Ghana’s 4-0 win in the third-place playoff.
Despite that strong first impression, Fuseini hadn’t been called up again until now, making this return all the more meaningful for him.
His recall comes at a particularly encouraging point in his club career. Fuseini joined Derby County on loan for the 2026/27 season, moving from Belgian side Union Saint-Gilloise in search of regular football in England.
He announced himself in style over the weekend, coming off the bench against Burnley at Turf Moor and scoring a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser to earn John Eustace’s side a 1-1 draw. It was his first goal since arriving at the Championship club, and it couldn’t have come at a better moment ahead of his return to international duty.
Fuseini is expected to link up with the Ghana camp this week as the Black Stars begin their AFCON qualifying campaign away to Ivory Coast in Bouaké on September 24.
From there, Ghana returns home to host Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium on September 29, before travelling to Tangier for a friendly against Morocco on October 4.
For Fuseini, this call-up is another chance to prove himself on the international stage. Having already shown promise in his previous appearances and now finding some rhythm at Derby, he’ll be hoping to make the most of this opportunity back in Black Stars colours.
