Ghanaian players abroad shine as Opoku makes dream Swansea debut
Ghanaian footballers abroad enjoyed an impressive weekend, with Joseph Opoku scoring on his Swansea City debut while Bernard Mensah and several other players made decisive contributions across Europe and beyond.
Opoku scores on Swansea debut
Joseph Opoku enjoyed a dream start to his Swansea City career after scoring on his competitive debut against Stoke City at the Bet365 Stadium.
The 21-year-old forward, who joined Swansea from Belgian side Zulte Waregem, found himself unmarked at the far post and calmly converted in the 22nd minute to cancel out Eric Bocat’s early opener for Stoke.
Opoku’s equaliser helped Swansea regain momentum before Adam Idah completed the comeback with a second-half goal to secure a 2-1 victory.
Mensah stars for Al-Riyadh
In the Saudi Pro League, experienced Ghanaian midfielder Bernard Mensah produced a strong individual performance for Al-Riyadh despite his side’s 4-2 defeat to Al-Ettifaq.
Mensah played a key role in his team’s attacking play, providing an assist before scoring himself in the 56th minute with a well-taken second-half strike.
Ghanaian attackers make their mark
Several other Ghanaian players also made significant contributions across European leagues.
Foster Apetorgbor – Sandefjord: The forward came off the bench to score a 57th-minute winner as Sandefjord secured a 2-1 away victory over Sarpsborg 08 in Norway’s Eliteserien.
Prince Kwabena Adu – Viktoria Plzeň: The young striker scored in the 56th minute as Viktoria Plzeň defeated FC Zlín 3-2 in the Czech Republic.
Emanuel Poku – Almere City: Poku got on the scoresheet in the Dutch Eredivisie after an energetic attacking display.
Matthew Cudjoe – Bnei Sakhnin: The Ghanaian attacker scored a crucial goal for the Israeli club in domestic action.
Bernard Tekpetey – Ludogorets: Tekpetey continued his impressive creative form in Bulgaria by providing an assist for Ludogorets.
From Opoku’s immediate impact in England to goals, assists and influential performances across Europe and the Middle East, Ghana’s foreign-based players enjoyed a productive weekend.
