Upper East Regional Minister Advances Agro-Industrial Corridor Vision in China
Upper East Regional Minister Akamugri Atanga Danatus has been busy in China, working to line up strategic partnerships that could help turn a big vision into reality an integrated agro-industrial and irrigation corridor stretching across Northern Ghana.
Travelling as part of the PEARL Framework organised by the Regional Coordinating Council, Danatus spent from September 13 to 20, 2026 meeting Chinese companies and government representatives, exploring possibilities across renewable energy, modern agriculture, poultry production, water management, and industrial park development.
While in China, the Minister met with Ghana’s Ambassador to China, Hon. Kojo Bonsu, to update him on the delegation’s progress and purpose. He laid out the Upper East Region’s investment potential, framing his broader objective clearly using Chinese partnerships to help transform the Region into a major agro-industrial and manufacturing hub in Northern Ghana.
Danatus used the meeting to ask for continued support from the Ghana Embassy in facilitating connections with credible Chinese investors, reiterating that the Region remains open to partnerships offering capital, technology, expertise, and jobs for local people.
The delegation’s schedule took them through several Chinese businesses, each representing a different piece of the puzzle Danatus is trying to assemble.
At Dongfang Electronics, discussions centred on renewable energy and solar technology, with talk of potentially establishing a production or assembly facility in the Upper East Region. Given the Region’s growing energy needs particularly for agriculture, irrigation, and industrial use — Danatus encouraged the company to seriously consider the area as an investment destination.
The visit to Jinghua Company Co. Limited focused on something more technical but equally important: water meter manufacturing and modern water management technology. Danatus emphasised that efficient water management will be absolutely critical if the proposed irrigation corridor is going to succeed.
At Ruihe Trade Company Limited, conversations turned to poultry — feed production, farming, processing, and value addition. Danatus stressed the importance of building a complete poultry value chain locally, one that creates jobs for young people, strengthens food security, and reduces Ghana’s reliance on imported poultry products.
Discussions with Linyi Trade Company Limited explored something a bit different — the possibility of establishing an industrial park alongside a China Mall in the Upper East Region. The industrial park could support manufacturing, processing, and trade, while the mall concept could help deepen commercial ties between Chinese businesses and local enterprises.
Finally, at Fox Company Limited, the focus shifted to technology and innovation. Danatus pushed the idea that the Upper East Region needs to embrace modern technological solutions more broadly, whether in agriculture, industry, commerce, or public service delivery.
Beyond private companies, Danatus also met with Chinese government officials connected to the Ministry of Commerce, using the opportunity to formally introduce the Upper East Region’s investment opportunities at an institutional level and explore how government cooperation could support future business partnerships.
Throughout the mission, Danatus was consistent in framing what the Upper East Region actually needs and it’s about more than just money. He pointed to technology, skills development, modern production systems, irrigation expertise, and manufacturing capacity as equally important pieces of the partnership he’s seeking.
His broader thinking is about breaking away from Ghana’s traditional pattern of exporting raw agricultural products. Instead, he’s pushing for an integrated system where farming, irrigation, processing, manufacturing, storage, transportation, and marketing all connect and reinforce one another which is essentially the vision behind the proposed Upper East Integrated Agro-Industrial and Irrigation Corridor.
This China mission has opened the door to conversations with companies and institutions whose expertise lines up well with what the Upper East Region needs. Danatus is expected to keep working with the Ghana Embassy in China, Chinese government officials, private investors, and stakeholders back home to turn these early discussions into actual investment deals.
The bigger picture remains ambitious factories, jobs, modern farms, irrigation infrastructure, renewable energy facilities, processing centres, and technology-driven businesses, all aimed at benefiting the youth of the Upper East Region in particular. This mission, then, represents an early but meaningful step toward positioning the Region as a genuine investment destination and deepening Ghana-China cooperation around agriculture, industry, and sustainable economic growth.
