ECG Trains 23 Technicians in Infrared Thermography to Cut Power Outages in Ashanti Region
The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) is betting on prevention over repair. The utility has trained 23 technicians and engineers in the Ashanti Sub-Transmission Region on infrared thermography, a skill aimed at catching equipment faults before they trigger power outages.
The two-day refresher course ran in Kumasi from August 20 to 21, 2026. It gave technical staff hands-on training in spotting “hotspots” abnormal heat buildup on electrical infrastructure before those hotspots turn into full-blown faults.
Infrared thermography relies on thermal imaging cameras. These cameras pick up unusual temperature patterns on equipment like substations, pylons, cables, and switchgear.
Catching those patterns early matters. Once a maintenance team spots a hotspot, they can act on it before it escalates into equipment failure and, eventually, a power cut for customers.
The training wasn’t purely theoretical. Staff moved between classroom sessions and practical field exercises to put the skills to immediate use.
Ing. Christopher Anafo, Acting General Manager of Ashanti Sub-Transmission, opened the programme. Ing. Randy Delanyo Adjorlolo of ECG’s Head Office in Accra led the facilitation.
Adjorlolo framed the training as part of a bigger shift in mindset at ECG. “This training is a proactive step towards strengthening ECG’s preventive maintenance culture,” he said.
Ing. Edem Evans Agra, Substation and Switchgear Maintenance Manager, explained what this looks like in practice. With infrared thermography in their toolkit, technicians in the region can catch potential faults early and get repairs done before they escalate.
That, he said, translates into fewer unexpected breakdowns, fewer power interruptions, and equipment that lasts longer.
It is about protecting our network and serving customers better, Agra said.
Collins Manu, Head of Public Relations for Ashanti Sub-Transmission, tied the training back to ECG’s wider goals. Even as the company continues investing in network upgrades, he said, the region is also taking its own proactive steps to catch problems before customers ever feel the impact.
This training sits within ECG’s broader strategy to sharpen operational efficiency, build out preventive maintenance, and make power supply more reliable across the Ashanti Region.
The 23 technicians trained were drawn from across the Sub-Transmission Region’s technical sections Protection & Control, Network Maintenance, Substation & Switchgear Maintenance, and Control Operations giving the initiative reach across multiple parts of the network.
