President Mahama Meets Alex Soros at UNGA81 on ECOWAS Integration
President John Dramani Mahama has kicked off his engagements on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), starting with a meeting with Alex Soros, Chair of the Open Society Foundations (OSF).
The two met in New York on Sunday, September 20, 2026. According to a statement on the meeting, Soros an investor and philanthropist who has engaged with Mahama before expressed interest, alongside OSF, in exploring partnerships that could help strengthen integration across the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
OSF is the grant-making network founded by Alex Soros’s father, George Soros, and has been active in supporting a wide range of global initiatives over the years.
This meeting wasn’t a standalone event. It served as a precursor to a presidential roundtable that the foundation is coordinating, bringing together a select group of global foundation presidents and chief executives.
Mahama shared details of who’s expected to attend in a social media post, naming organisations including Gates, Ford, OSF, Hewlett Packard, Hilton, Rockefeller, Humanity United, Anglo American, Chandler, and UBS Optimus, among others.
Mahama is scheduled to deliver Ghana’s official statement at the UNGA General Debate on Thursday, September 24, marking one of the key moments of his engagement at this year’s Assembly.
