GoldBod Backs Pete Edochie’s African Youth Mentorship Initiative

Veteran Nigerian actor Pete Edochie has gained a new ally in his push to invest in Africa’s next generation. The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) has pledged its support for his African Youth Mentorship Initiative, a programme focused on inspiring and developing young talent across the continent.

The commitment came together during a courtesy call Edochie paid to GoldBod CEO Sammy Gyamfi at the Board’s headquarters in Accra on Tuesday, October 6.

This mentorship programme is actually part of something bigger Edochie’s wider African Legacy Project, which brings together a new book, a documentary film, and a youth development initiative aiming to reach roughly 500,000 young Africans.

For Gyamfi, the decision to back the initiative made sense given GoldBod’s own existing work. He pointed out that the mentorship programme aligns naturally with the Board’s Special Intervention Projects (SIP), which already focus on mentorship, skills training, and entrepreneurship among young people.

We count ourselves in. We’ll be part and parcel of this inspiring project because we have the youth at heart, Gyamfi said.

He didn’t hold back in praising Edochie’s decision to channel decades of career experience and personal insight into mentoring young Africans, describing it as a project that reaches far beyond entertainment touching on personal development, leadership, and Africa’s future more broadly.

One particularly striking moment from the meeting came when Gyamfi learned that GoldBod and its work actually feature in Edochie’s new book. He described himself as both surprised and genuinely honoured by the inclusion, seeing it as a reflection of Edochie’s growing interest in Africa’s economic development and responsible management of the continent’s natural resources.

For Gyamfi, this detail speaks to something larger about Edochie’s advocacy that his contribution to Africa stretches well beyond his long career in film. He singled out Edochie’s push for Africans to take greater ownership over the continent’s mineral wealth, ensuring that natural resources genuinely benefit African societies rather than being extracted without real return to the people.

The meeting also gave Gyamfi an opportunity to walk Edochie through the progress Ghana’s gold sector has made since GoldBod was established in October 2025.

He revealed that Ghana repatriated US$10.8 billion from gold in 2025, while the cedi appreciated by 41 percent against the US dollar over the same period. He also noted that Ghana ended the year with 5.7 months of import cover, while inflation dropped from 23.3 percent down to around five percent.

Gyamfi credited part of this progress to measures designed to give Ghana stronger control over the trading and management of its own gold resources, ensuring the proceeds genuinely benefit everyday Ghanaians.

This collaboration between GoldBod and Edochie ties together three distinct threads African cultural legacy, youth empowerment, and economic sovereignty.

For Edochie, the African Legacy Project is about converting decades of entertainment-industry experience into something that actively shapes the next generation. For GoldBod, supporting the initiative offers a natural extension of its existing youth-focused work, while reinforcing a broader conversation about Africa’s ability to manage its own resources and chart its own path forward.

The partnership reflects a shared belief that empowering young Africans requires more than just knowledge and mentorship. It also means helping them genuinely understand the continent’s cultural heritage, economic potential, and the responsibility they carry for shaping its future.
