Apple Unveils First Foldable iPhone ‘Duo’ at $1,999 Alongside iPhone 18 Pro

Apple just had its biggest product event of the year, and it delivered exactly the kind of surprise fans have been waiting years for its first-ever foldable iPhone. Alongside a full refresh of the Pro lineup, updated AirPods, and new Apple Watches, the event also marked a personal milestone: it was new CEO John Ternus’s first major keynote in the role.

The star of the show was undoubtedly the iPhone Duo, Apple’s first foldable smartphone and arguably the boldest shift in direction for its flagship line in years.

Unfolded, the Duo reveals a spacious 7.6-inch display. Folded shut, it shrinks down to a compact device with a 5.4-inch outer screen you can use on the go. Apple says it’s the thinnest iPhone the company has ever made when opened, and it’s been built with viewing, gaming, and multitasking on that larger canvas in mind.

Priced at $1,999, the Duo hits shelves on October 23. It also supports Apple Pencil input, and comes with a redesigned iOS experience tailored to make the most of that bigger screen.

This move puts Apple squarely into a market that Samsung and Google have already been building out for years. Apple’s bet here is that its usual combination of hardware polish and software ecosystem will be enough to pull in customers willing to pay a premium for this new form factor.

Alongside the Duo, Apple also introduced the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, starting at $1,199 and $1,299 respectively.

Both phones run on Apple’s new A20 Pro chip and feature a 48-megapixel Fusion Main camera with variable aperture, giving users more creative control over photos and video. The Dynamic Island has also been shrunk down slightly. On the Pro Max specifically, Apple is touting the biggest battery-life improvement in iPhone history.

Pre-orders for the new Pro models open September 12, with sales starting September 18. Apple is also rolling out Siri AI through iOS 27, continuing its push into artificial intelligence while leaning heavily on messaging around privacy and on-device processing.

Apple didn’t stop at phones. The Apple Watch Series 12 introduces a new Health Sensing System, offering more frequent heart-rate and heart-rate-variability tracking, along with a new “readiness” score meant to give users a sense of how prepared their body is for the day ahead. It starts at $399.

For more serious athletes and outdoor enthusiasts, the Apple Watch Ultra 4 gets the same new health-sensing tech, plus up to 45 hours of outdoor workout tracking. That one starts at $799.

On the audio side, Apple unveiled AirPods 5, finally bringing active noise cancellation to its open-ear design. They also come with improved sound quality, Siri AI integration, and Live Translation built in. Pricing starts at $129, with availability from September 18.

This event carried extra weight for Ternus, who officially became Apple’s CEO on September 1, succeeding longtime chief executive Tim Cook. Wednesday’s keynote marked his first time leading a major product launch in the role and by most measures, he chose an ambitious one to debut with.

Taken together, this launch is about more than just a new iPhone cycle. With the Duo, Apple is stepping into foldable territory where rivals already have a head start, while the new Pro phones, watches, AirPods, and expanding AI features show a company continuing to build out an increasingly intelligent, interconnected ecosystem.
