Fort Hood Apache helicopter crash kills two in Texas
Two people have died after an AH-64 Apache military helicopter crashed in central Texas, with authorities investigating the cause of the incident.
The crash occurred near the village of Salado, south of the US Army’s Fort Hood military installation. Police responded to an emergency call at about 13:33 local time (18:33 GMT) after reports of wreckage in fields in the area.
The two people on board were pronounced dead at the scene, according to officials.
The aircraft was an AH-64 Apache attack helicopter based at nearby Fort Hood, the US Army confirmed.
Large fire reported at crash site
When officers arrived at the scene, they found the crashed helicopter and a large fire that was spreading rapidly.
Bell County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Cliff Coleman said the fire was getting out of control very quickly as emergency crews responded to the incident.
Authorities secured the area while emergency personnel worked at the crash site.
The US Army said an investigation into the crash is underway, with officials yet to disclose the identities of the two service members or provide details about what caused the aircraft to go down.
Army vows support for crew and families
Brigadier General Ethan Diven, acting commanding general of the 1st Cavalry Division, said the immediate priority was to secure the crash site and support the initial emergency response.
“Our thoughts are with the crew and their families as we await further information,” he said.
The Army is expected to conduct an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash.

The AH-64 Apache is a twin-engine, four-bladed attack helicopter operated by the US Army. It is designed for a range of military missions, including armed reconnaissance, close combat, mobile strike and vertical manoeuvre operations.
The aircraft has a two-person crew, with the pilot seated in the rear cockpit and the co-pilot gunner positioned in the front.
