Kumasi residents face targeted daytime electricity interruptions through November as GRIDCo and ECG complete a major transmission upgrade. The 161kV line is expected to be finished by the end of November, while a fifth feeder is targeted for December. Here is what the official timetable and capacity figures mean for households and businesses.

KUMASI — Electricity infrastructure works in Greater Kumasi have entered a critical phase, with Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) warning of temporary, localised power cuts as engineers upgrade the 161-kilovolt Anwomaso–Ahodwo transmission line. A separate fifth feeder at the Ridge Substation is expected by the end of December.

Officials say the investments are intended to relieve overloaded equipment and improve reliability in the Ashanti Region. The improvements are projected rather than demonstrated: construction and commissioning must be completed before consumers can assess whether interruptions become less frequent.

Two projects, two deadlines

Greater Kumasi: reported demand and capacity

Demand572.1 MVA
Installed capacity547 MVA

Calculated difference: 25.1 MVA (4.6%).

MVA measures apparent power. This comparison does not establish an equivalent MW shortfall or continuous unmet demand.

Transmission-line capacity: previous versus target

Previous rating~364 MW
Target rating1,000 MW

Planned increase: approximately 636 MW, or 2.75 times the previous rating.

This is transmission transfer capability, not new electricity generation or verified commissioning.
