Power outages expected in Accra, Volta and Ashanti during ECG maintenance

ECG and GRIDCo say planned engineering works and emergency repairs will disrupt electricity supply in parts of the Greater Accra, Volta and Ashanti regions this week.

ACCRA, Ghana — Temporary power outages are expected in parts of the Greater Accra, Volta and Ashanti regions as the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) undertake planned maintenance works and emergency repairs aimed at improving electricity supply reliability.

The outages are expected to affect households, businesses and some industrial operations in several communities during scheduled engineering works that officials say are necessary to stabilise the national power network. According to notices issued by ECG and GRIDCo, maintenance works in parts of the Volta Region are expected to affect communities, including Dzita, Agbledomi, Blekusu and surrounding areas.

In the Ashanti Region, planned works at the Asawinso Bulk Supply Point are expected to disrupt electricity supply in parts of Bibiani, Bekwai, Nkawie and nearby communities, including some mining areas. Communities within the Tema operational area, including Community 22, Michel Camp, Sakumono, Jericho and Adjei Kojo, are also expected to experience temporary outages during scheduled repairs.

Additional maintenance operations in sections of Accra West and Accra East are expected to affect areas including Broadcasting, Haasto, Ablekuma, New Bortianor and nearby suburbs. ECG and GRIDCo said outage durations would vary depending on the nature of the maintenance work and fault repairs being undertaken in each area.

Repairs follow recent network faults

The maintenance works follow several recent electricity disruptions linked to underground cable faults and transformer problems in parts of the country. Earlier this month, ECG reported outages in sections of the Western Region after a cable fault disrupted electricity supply to Apowa Township, Adwoa, TUC Estate and nearby communities. The latest repairs also come amid broader concerns among industrial users over voltage instability and recurring interruptions affecting production and operational efficiency.

This month, ECG assured UNICEM Cement Ghana Limited that measures were being implemented to improve voltage stability and reduce interruptions affecting industrial operations in the Ashanti Region. Some residents and small business operators in affected areas have previously raised concerns about the impact of recurring outages on household activities, refrigeration, internet access and trading operations.

Energy analysts say the maintenance exercises highlight continuing pressure on Ghana’s electricity infrastructure as demand for power grows across urban centres and industrial zones. ECG and GRIDCo apologised for the inconvenience caused and said engineers had been deployed to restore electricity supply as quickly as possible. The latest maintenance exercises come as Ghana’s electricity distributors face increasing pressure to improve power reliability amid rising demand from households, businesses and industry.
