Xreal Smart Glasses: Google Partner Says Industry Is Finally Ready

The smart glasses industry may finally be approaching a breakthrough moment, according to Xreal founder and CEO Chi Xu, whose company has partnered with Google to develop next-generation extended reality (XR) devices.

Speaking during Google I/O 2026 in Mountain View, California, Xu said years of technical challenges and weak consumer adoption may now be giving way to a more mature market as hardware, software and artificial intelligence capabilities improve.

Xreal Smart Glasses Aim to Redefine Wearable Technology

Xreal’s latest device, known as Project Aura, is a pair of wired smart glasses featuring built-in OLED displays capable of streaming high-resolution content directly within the lenses.

The glasses are powered by a compact external computing device, described by the company as a pocket-sized “puck,” which users can carry while using the headset.

According to Xu, the technology is designed to support both entertainment and productivity, offering immersive experiences such as holographic gaming, virtual movie viewing, AI-powered navigation and mixed reality workspaces.

Users can also interact with applications using hand-tracking controls, allowing them to browse the web, paint holographic images and access virtual interfaces without traditional controllers.

Smart Glasses Industry Faces Longstanding Challenges

The smart glasses market has struggled for years due to bulky hardware, limited software functionality and consumer concerns around comfort and social acceptance.

Despite heavy investment from major technology companies, many firms in the sector have continued operating at significant losses.

“Everybody’s losing money,” Xu said during the conference, acknowledging the financial difficulties surrounding the industry.

However, industry analysts believe recent improvements in lightweight hardware and AI-powered software could help accelerate mainstream adoption.

The growing popularity of Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses has also contributed to renewed optimism within the sector, even as Meta’s Reality Labs division continues to report major financial losses.

Google Partnership Strengthens Xreal’s Ambitions

Xreal’s partnership with Google is expected to play a key role in expanding the company’s software ecosystem and mixed reality capabilities.

During demonstrations at Google I/O, the company showcased immersive Google Maps experiences, VR YouTube content and holographic productivity tools integrated into the glasses.

Xu said the company believes smart glasses will eventually evolve beyond entertainment and become practical tools for everyday work and communication.

“It’s not just about watching the NBA game in a hologram type of format, you could also go to a coffee shop and do some work,” he said.

Commercial Launch and IPO Plans Ahead

Currently, Project Aura is only available to developers, though Xreal plans a wider commercial launch later this year.

The company is also reportedly preparing for an initial public offering (IPO) expected before the end of 2026.

Xu added that Xreal has been working to improve profitability by increasing margins while reducing marketing and operational costs.

“Next year is the year when we could actually break even,” he said.
