United Nations Day: Lt. Col. Newson Highlights Ghana’s Peacekeeping Contribution

Ghana’s peacekeepers marked United Nations Day far from home. The Ghana Battalion (GHANBATT) 93, serving with the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), held a flag-raising ceremony in Al Qawzah on Saturday, October 24, 2026.

The event was built around a bigger purpose. It aimed to raise awareness of the UN’s core values and achievements, while renewing commitment to peace, security, human rights, and sustainable development worldwide.

Commanding Officer Lieutenant Colonel Emmanuel Bortey Newson addressed the gathered personnel. He spoke directly about Ghana’s role in international peacekeeping.

According to Newson, Ghana has served with distinction across multiple UN missions over the years. That service has earned the country global recognition for discipline, professionalism, and humanity.

Newson didn’t stop at praising Ghana’s past contributions. He also made a broader point.

He stressed that genuine independence and security require a deliberate choice. Nations must commit to peaceful coexistence rather than armed conflict.

He reaffirmed GHANBATT’s support for the UN Charter’s core ideals. That includes maintaining international peace, promoting friendly relations between nations, and advancing sustainable development.

Newson went further still. He called on all peace-loving nations, international bodies, and regional organisations to reflect deeply on what peace truly means.

The event ended with a tribute to the UN’s founding mission and its lasting achievements in global stability. It also reaffirmed Ghana’s continued dedication to international law, human rights, and peace operations around the world.
