Ghana wins bid to host 2027 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations

Accra, Ghana 28 April 2026 |

Ghana has secured the rights to host the 2027 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, the president of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Okraku, has confirmed, a historic return of a major continental youth tournament to the country.

Okraku said the decision reflects confidence in Ghana’s organisational capacity and provides an opportunity to strengthen youth football development at both the national and regional levels.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF), which oversees the competition, has not yet issued a detailed public statement on the hosting arrangements, including venues and timelines.

Key pathway to global competition

The U-20 Africa Cup of Nations is one of the continent’s most important youth tournaments, bringing together leading national teams and serving as a qualifying route for the FIFA U-20 World Cup.

The competition has historically played a central role in developing players who go on to compete at the senior international level and in top European leagues.

Infrastructure and investment focus

We expect hosting the tournament to accelerate:

  • Stadium and training facility upgrades
  • Youth development programmes
  • Operational and event management capacity

Preparations will require coordination between the Ghana Football Association, government authorities and CAF to meet international competition standards.

Ghana’s youth football legacy

Ghana has a strong record in youth football, including winning the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2009 — the only African nation to have achieved that feat — and consistently producing players who transition to elite professional levels.

Hosting the 2027 tournament is likely to reinforce Ghana’s position as a leading hub for football development on the continent.

What happens next

As planning progresses, we expect further details on host cities, match venues, and scheduling. It remains unclear when CAF will formally confirm the full tournament framework.
