Emergency responders are searching for at least two people believed to be trapped beneath rubble after a building collapsed near Melcom Plus in Accra’s North Industrial Area early Sunday, triggering a major rescue operation.

ACCRA, Ghana — Emergency crews are searching for at least two people believed to be trapped beneath debris after a building collapsed near Melcom Plus in Accra’s North Industrial Area in the early hours of Sunday. The incident has prompted a large-scale rescue operation involving the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Armed Forces.

According to preliminary reports from emergency responders at the scene, the collapse occurred at approximately 4:25 a.m. and led to the immediate deployment of rescue teams to locate and extract victims feared trapped beneath the rubble.

One Victim Rescued, Search Continues

Initial reports indicate that one person has already been rescued and transported to hospital for medical treatment, while emergency crews continue efforts to locate and reach others believed to be trapped inside the collapsed structure.

Firefighters from the Circle Fire Station and the GNFS Headquarters were among the first responders to arrive at the scene and are conducting intensive search-and-rescue operations using specialised equipment. Authorities have cordoned off the area to facilitate rescue activities and reduce risks to rescue personnel and bystanders as concerns remain over the stability of sections of the damaged structure.

Heavy equipment is expected to assist in removing concrete slabs, steel reinforcements and other debris obstructing access to those believed trapped beneath the wreckage.

Witnesses Report Hearing Loud Crash

Residents and workers in nearby buildings reported hearing a loud crashing sound shortly before dawn.

“I heard a huge bang and when we came out, the whole structure had come down,” an eyewitness told local media.

Images from the scene show extensive structural damage, with large sections of the building reduced to rubble as rescue personnel work through debris in difficult conditions.

Fresh Concerns Over Building Safety

The collapse comes only days after another building collapse at Adenta, renewing public concerns about building safety standards, regulatory compliance and enforcement of construction regulations in Ghana.

While the cause of Sunday’s collapse has not yet been established, the latest incident is likely to intensify scrutiny of construction practices and oversight mechanisms in the country.

Investigation Expected

Authorities have not yet announced the cause of the collapse. Investigations are expected once rescue operations are completed and the site has been secured.

At the time of publication, emergency services remained at the scene and had not confirmed the total number of casualties or the precise number of people trapped beneath the rubble. Rescue efforts were continuing as authorities worked against time to reach anyone still believed to be trapped inside the collapsed building.
