4 Dead, Several Injured After Dynamite Explosion in Aboso Following Shot at Snake
Four people have died and several others have sustained serious injuries following a dynamite explosion in Aboso in the Prestea Huni-Valley Municipality of the Western Region.
The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon and has shocked residents of the mining community. Local authorities say the explosion was triggered after a gunshot fired at a snake struck explosives stored in a nearby shop.
According to the Assembly Member for the Akutuase Electoral Area, Emmanuel Eshun, the incident began when residents spotted a large snake that had reportedly been terrorising the area for some time.
A resident who first saw the reptile alerted a nearby shop owner and fired a warning shot in an attempt to drive it away. Moments later, a security officer at the shop reportedly attempted to shoot the snake directly.
Gunshot Triggers Explosion
According to the Assembly Member, the bullet instead struck a stock of dynamite slabs that were being kept in a nearby shop, causing a powerful explosion that ripped through the area.
The blast killed three people instantly, including the shop owner, identified as Kofi Fletcher. A fourth victim later died while being transported to a nearby health facility, raising the death toll to four.
Several other people sustained serious injuries and are receiving treatment at health facilities. Authorities have not yet released the identities of all the victims.
Investigation Expected
The Ghana Police Service and other relevant authorities are expected to launch a full investigation into the explosion.
Investigators are expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the presence and sale of explosive materials within the community, as well as whether any laws governing the storage and handling of explosives were breached.
The incident has also raised fresh concerns among residents about public safety and the storage of commercial explosives in residential areas.
Authorities are expected to provide further updates as investigations continue.
