Obuasi SHTS Headmaster Hospitalised After Student Attack Over Infanticide Allegations

The Headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS), Abdullai Zakaria, has been hospitalised after he was allegedly attacked by students following accusations that he buried a newborn baby on the school premises.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, at the school in Obuasi in the Ashanti Region. Mr Zakaria reportedly sustained serious injuries, including deep cuts to his head, during the attack.

He was initially taken to the AngloGold Ashanti Hospital in Obuasi for emergency treatment before being transferred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi for further medical care.

Students Protest Over Allegations

Speaking on the Ghanakoma Morning Show on Akoma 87.9 FM in Kumasi on Wednesday, August 5, citizen journalist Great Aakash confirmed the attack and said the headmaster suffered severe head injuries.

According to him, the attack was linked to allegations circulating among students that the headmaster was involved in the burial of a newborn baby, an issue that has triggered tension within the school community.

The exact circumstances surrounding the allegations remain unclear, and authorities are expected to conduct investigations to establish the facts.

Police Deploy Personnel to School

Following the incident, armed police officers have been deployed to the school to restore calm, protect lives and property, and prevent further disturbances.

The Security Council is also expected to hold an emergency meeting to assess the situation and determine the next steps, including whether temporary closure of the school may be necessary to maintain peace.

The Ghana Police Service has launched investigations into both the allegations surrounding the newborn burial and the assault on the headmaster.
