Berekum youth coalition calls for end to galamsey
A coalition of youth associations in the Berekum East Municipality of the Bono Region has called on the government to take immediate action to end illegal mining activities in Berekum and surrounding communities.
The Berekum Environmental Protection and Anti-Galamsey Coalition made the call on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, during a demonstration against illegal mining, which members say is destroying farmlands and threatening the livelihoods of residents.
The coalition is also urging residents to unite and support efforts to protect the municipality’s remaining agricultural lands from further destruction.
Coalition threatens legal action
The leader of the coalition and former Global Chairman of the Berekumman Citizens Association, Rev. Kofi Kyere, warned that the group would consider legal action to stop illegal mining in Berekum if the government fails to intervene.
He said Berekum has limited land available for agricultural activities and cautioned that continued illegal mining could deprive future generations of their means of livelihood.
According to him, protecting the available agricultural land is critical to the long-term economic and food security of the municipality.
Berekum traditional leaders condemn mining
The Dabehene of Berekum, Nana Boateng Darteh, also condemned illegal mining activities in the municipality, accusing miners of destroying lands that have been reserved for farming.
He called on residents to unite in the fight against illegal mining and stressed that the community would not accept either illegal mining or what he described as responsible or cooperative mining activities in the area.
MP receives petition
The Member of Parliament for Berekum East, Simon Amparbeng Kyeremeh, received the petition on behalf of the people and assured residents of his commitment to helping eradicate illegal mining activities from the municipality.
He said the government was against illegal mining and pledged to do everything within his capacity to prevent galamsey activities from taking place in Berekum.
The MP also called on residents to unite and support efforts to address the menace.
Farmers warn of food shortages
Some farmers affected by illegal mining activities expressed concern over the destruction of their farms and the impact on their livelihoods.
They appealed to the government, particularly the Bono Regional Minister, to intervene urgently to protect agricultural lands in the municipality.
The farmers warned that if the destruction continues unchecked, Berekum could face serious food shortages and potentially famine in the coming years.
