Ghana winger Abdul Fatawu made an encouraging start to Premier League life with Ipswich Town, creating two chances and winning 10 duels as the promoted side opened their campaign with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Sunderland.

IPSWICH, England – Ghana international Abdul Fatawu delivered an energetic performance on his Premier League debut for Ipswich Town as Gary O’Neil’s side beat Sunderland 2-1 at Portman Road. The 22-year-old started on the right of Ipswich’s attack and played 66 minutes, offering width, direct running and creativity as the hosts marked their return to the English top flight with three points.

Fatawu did not score or provide an assist, but his influence was reflected in the underlying numbers. He created two chances and won 10 duels, with no player in the match recording more in either category.

His most threatening spell came shortly after half-time. In the 50th minute, Fatawu delivered a cross that narrowly evaded Japan international Daizen Maeda. Minutes later, another delivery from the Ghanaian was redirected just wide by Julio Enciso as Ipswich pushed for a second goal. Those moments underlined Fatawu’s role in stretching Sunderland’s defence and providing a route into dangerous areas from the right.

Ipswich strike first before Sunderland respond

Ipswich took the lead in the 24th minute following an impressive piece of individual play from Enciso. The Paraguay international intercepted a loose pass from Sunderland defender Luke O’Nien, moved beyond O’Nien and Dan Ballard and then squared the ball for Brazilian forward Emersonn to finish.

Sunderland responded before half-time.

Nilson Angulo equalised in the 39th minute with a free-kick that struck the crossbar on its way past Ipswich goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen, sending the teams into the interval level at 1-1.

Ipswich emerged with renewed attacking intent after the break, with Fatawu twice involved in moves that came close to restoring the home side’s advantage.

The Ghanaian was replaced by Kasey McAteer after 66 minutes as O’Neil turned to his bench in search of a breakthrough.

Clarke delivers dramatic late winner

The decisive moment eventually arrived in the 90th minute.

Sunderland substitute Omar Alderete surrendered possession before Sasa Lukic found Jack Clarke. The former Sunderland winger cut inside and finished beyond goalkeeper Robin Roefs to secure all three points for Ipswich. It was Clarke’s first Premier League goal and gave Ipswich a winning start on their return to the division.

Ipswich generated 1.74 expected goals from 10 attempts, compared with Sunderland’s 0.76 from 11 shots.

The result also represented a significant opening statement for a club attempting to establish itself in the Premier League again following promotion from the Championship.

Fatawu offers Ipswich a different threat

For Fatawu, the performance provided an early indication of why Ipswich moved to sign him permanently from Leicester City in July.

Leicester confirmed on 21 July that an agreement had been reached for the winger’s transfer for an undisclosed fee. Fatawu left the club after three seasons in which he made 100 appearances and scored 16 goals.

He arrived at Portman Road with previous Premier League experience and a reputation for direct attacking play, particularly from the right flank. Against Sunderland, however, his contribution extended beyond carrying the ball at defenders.

Winning 10 duels demonstrated his willingness to compete physically, while his two created chances showed the threat he can provide when given space to deliver from wide positions. The numbers should not be overstated after a single match, and Enciso was arguably Ipswich’s most influential attacking player. The Paraguayan registered three shots, six touches in the opposition penalty area and four successful dribbles. But Fatawu’s display was nevertheless a promising first Premier League appearance in Ipswich colours.
