Ayitey Powers Arrested Over Alleged Death Threat Against NSA Boss Yaw Ampofo Ankrah
Former professional boxer Michael Ayitey Okai, better known to Ghanaians as Ayitey Powers, is now in police custody. The Accra Regional Police Command picked him up over an alleged death threat aimed at National Sports Authority Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah.
The 46-year-old was arrested on Monday, August 24, after a video began making the rounds on social media. In it, he’s alleged to have made threatening remarks directed at the NSA boss.
According to the Accra Regional Police Command, Ayitey Powers remains in custody and is cooperating with investigators as they piece together what actually happened.
Chief Superintendent Juliana Obeng, the Command’s Head of Public Affairs, confirmed the arrest in an official statement. She explained that once the video started circulating online, police moved quickly to open an investigation into both its contents and the allegations tied to it.
The arrest follows a video circulating on social media in which the suspect is alleged to have issued the threat, the statement read.
So far, police haven’t said much about what may have sparked the alleged remarks, or whether there was any existing dispute between Ayitey Powers and Ampofo Ankrah. That’s part of what investigators are now trying to establish along with confirming the video is authentic and understanding the full context behind it, before determining whether any criminal offence was actually committed.
News of the arrest has understandably caught attention across Ghana’s sporting circles. Ayitey Powers isn’t just any name he built a long professional boxing career and became one of the sport’s more recognisable figures in the country before stepping away from the ring and moving into other ventures.
For now, police are urging caution. They’ve asked the public not to spread unverified information about the case while investigations are still ongoing, and to let officers do their work without added speculation.
The Accra Regional Police Command says any further action will depend entirely on what the investigation turns up, and that due process will be followed. As it stands, Ayitey Powers remains in custody, with no word yet on whether he’ll face formal charges or when he might appear in court.
