Pitso Mosimane Returns as South Africa’s New Head Coach
The South African Football Association (SAFA) has officially named Pitso Mosimane as the new head coach of South Africa’s national team, marking his return for a second permanent spell in charge.
Mosimane, fondly known as “Jingles” back home, steps into a role he’s held before, at a moment when the pressure is very real for whoever takes it on.
His appointment comes right after the departure of Belgian coach Hugo Broos, who chose not to extend his stay following a highly successful five-year run in charge.
Broos took over South Africa in 2021 and left a genuine mark on the national team. Under him, Bafana Bafana grew into a genuinely competitive side, blending experienced heads with emerging young talent. His time in charge peaked with a bronze medal at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and a run to the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
That’s the standard Mosimane now inherits not a rebuild from scratch, but a genuine challenge to build on real progress.
For Mosimane, this return is about more than just a job. It’s a chance to reconnect with a national team he already has history with, and to bring his considerable experience back to the international stage.
His résumé speaks for itself. At club level, Mosimane has won the CAF Champions League three times, cementing his reputation as one of Africa’s most successful coaches. Now he’s bringing that pedigree back into an international setting.
There’s no easing into this job. Mosimane’s first priority will be the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, with South Africa drawn into Group D alongside Guinea, Eritrea, and co-hosts Kenya.
Kenya’s automatic qualification as tournament hosts adds extra pressure on South Africa to lock down one of the remaining qualification spots. Mosimane won’t have long to settle in either his first major assignment comes in September, with back-to-back fixtures against Guinea and Eritrea.
South African football fans are clearly excited to see Jingles back, but that excitement comes paired with real expectations. With a promising generation of players coming through and a solid foundation already laid by Broos, Mosimane will be expected to blend his tactical know-how with the renewed ambition surrounding the national team.
It’s fair to say this second chapter begins with very little margin for error. But if there’s one coach who understands exactly what South African football demands of him, it’s Pitso Mosimane.
