North Korea Launches Ballistic Missiles as Tensions Rise With US and South Korea
North Korea has launched two short-range ballistic missiles towards the sea, prompting renewed concern in South Korea and Japan as tensions continue to rise on the Korean Peninsula.
South Korea’s military said the launches took place on Sunday from the Wonsan area on North Korea’s eastern coast. The two missiles were launched roughly three hours apart, with one travelling about 450 kilometres and the second more than 600 kilometres before falling into the sea.
The launches came amid increasingly hostile exchanges between Pyongyang and Washington and follow criticism from North Korean officials over US-led military activities in the region.
South Korea’s presidential office called on North Korea to immediately stop ballistic missile launches, which are prohibited under United Nations Security Council resolutions. South Korea’s military also said it remained prepared to respond to potential provocations while maintaining close coordination with the United States.
Japan’s Defence Ministry separately detected a suspected North Korean missile launch. Japanese officials said the projectile did not land within Japan’s territorial waters.
North Korea rejects US military exercises
The latest launches follow North Korean criticism of military exercises involving the United States and its regional allies.
Kim Yo Jong, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and a senior government figure, has repeatedly criticised US-led military exercises, describing them as provocative.
North Korea has also threatened to strengthen its nuclear deterrent in response to what it describes as hostile policies from Washington.
The United States and South Korea have attempted to adjust aspects of their military cooperation while keeping their security alliance intact. Washington has also previously sought to reopen dialogue with Pyongyang.
However, negotiations between the United States and North Korea have remained stalled since diplomatic talks broke down in 2019.
The latest missile launches demonstrate the difficulty facing efforts to restart those discussions.
South Korea calls for stability
South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has supported renewed dialogue with North Korea and has argued that communication is important for reducing military risks on the peninsula.
Pyongyang, however, has continued to demand a fundamental change in US policy before agreeing to resume negotiations.
North Korea has also strengthened its relationships with Russia and China, adding another layer to the region’s geopolitical dynamics.
The missile tests are likely to increase pressure on South Korea, Japan and the United States to coordinate their responses while avoiding further escalation.
For Japan, the repeated missile activity remains particularly significant because North Korean missiles can travel across large distances and potentially threaten Japanese territory or surrounding waters.
Nuclear programme remains central concern
North Korea’s nuclear weapons programme remains one of the most difficult security issues in East Asia.
Pyongyang argues that its nuclear capabilities are necessary for national security and deterrence. The United States, South Korea and Japan maintain that North Korea should abandon its nuclear weapons programme.
The United Nations has imposed sanctions on North Korea over its nuclear and ballistic missile activities, although enforcement and diplomatic efforts have faced significant challenges.
The latest launches also came shortly after North Korea rejected an International Atomic Energy Agency resolution concerning its nuclear programme.
With military exercises, missile tests and increasingly hostile rhetoric continuing, regional governments are closely monitoring developments.
For now, the missiles landed at sea and there were no immediate reports of casualties. But the latest launches underline the continuing security challenges facing the Korean Peninsula and the wider Asia-Pacific region.
