Erling Haaland scored a late winner as Norway beat Côte d’Ivoire 2-1 to reach the FIFA World Cup last 16 for the first time since 1998, ending the African champions’ campaign despite a spirited second-half fightback.

LOS ANGELES, United States — Erling Haaland struck late to send Norway into the FIFA World Cup last 16 for the first time since 1998 as the Scandinavian side defeated Côte d’Ivoire 2-1 in a hard-fought round-of-32 tie, ending the African champions’ hopes of a deep tournament run.

The Manchester City striker scored his fifth goal of the tournament in the closing stages after Norway had surrendered an earlier lead, setting up a heavyweight last-16 meeting with five-time world champions Brazil.

Norway made the brighter finish to the first half after surviving sustained pressure from Côte d’Ivoire during the opening exchanges.

The Elephants thought they had taken the lead through Antonio Nusa in the 39th minute, but the goal was ruled out after a foul in the build-up. Moments later, Martin Ødegaard produced a superb curling finish from the edge of the penalty area after being released by Nusa, giving Norway a 1-0 advantage before the interval.

Patrick Berg thought he had restored Norway’s lead after Oscar Bobb created space down the right, but the effort was turned into his own net by an Ivorian defender. Although the move initially caused confusion, Norway continued to press and eventually found the decisive breakthrough.

With five minutes remaining, substitute Oscar Bobb delivered a low cross into the six-yard area where Haaland reacted quickest to finish from close range and spark jubilant celebrations among the Norwegian players and supporters. Côte d’Ivoire refused to surrender.

Amad Diallo twice came close to forcing extra time during stoppage time, first with a powerful free-kick brilliantly tipped over by goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland before Evann Guessand headed narrowly wide from the resulting corner. Norway survived the late pressure to secure only their second appearance in a World Cup last-16 match in nearly three decades.

For Côte d’Ivoire, the defeat ended an encouraging campaign that had showcased the depth of African football on the global stage. The Elephants created numerous opportunities and matched Norway for long periods but were ultimately punished by Haaland’s clinical finishing.

Norway’s victory continues one of the tournament’s most compelling stories.

The Scandinavians arrived at the World Cup with renewed optimism under a talented generation led by Haaland and captain Martin Ødegaard.
