US Lifts Restrictions on Anthropic’s Powerful AI Models Fable and Mythos

The United States government has reversed restrictions placed on some of Anthropic’s most powerful artificial intelligence systems, reopening access to Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 after weeks of uncertainty around the future of the models.
Anthropic announced that access restoration would begin immediately after receiving notice from the US Department of Commerce that export restrictions had been removed.
The decision comes only weeks after the company abruptly suspended the advanced models worldwide following national security concerns raised by US officials.
Why Fable 5 and Mythos 5 Were Restricted
The controversy started after concerns emerged over a possible “jailbreak” affecting Fable 5.
A jailbreak typically refers to a method used to bypass a model’s safety mechanisms and force it to perform actions outside its intended boundaries.
Government officials reportedly feared that the models could potentially be exploited for cybersecurity-related risks, particularly because Mythos 5 was designed with advanced reasoning capabilities capable of identifying vulnerabilities in software systems.
Anthropic previously disagreed with the severity of the concerns and argued that the issue involved only a narrow vulnerability rather than a widespread security problem.
The company had stated earlier:
“We disagree that the finding of a narrow potential jailbreak should be cause for recalling a commercial model.”
What Changed?
According to reports, Anthropic reached an agreement with US authorities involving additional safeguards and monitoring commitments.
Under the agreement, Anthropic reportedly agreed to:
- Proactively detect and address security risks
- Coordinate with regulators on future advanced model releases
- Notify authorities of malicious activity involving its systems
- Continue strengthening model safety protections
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick reportedly indicated that these commitments addressed the government’s immediate concerns.
However, the Department of Commerce also reserved the right to reintroduce restrictions if future risks emerge.
Fable 5 Will Not Return Exactly the Same
Users should not expect the same version of Fable 5 that was briefly available before the shutdown.
Anthropic says additional protections have been added to block the jailbreak method identified during testing.
Those changes may also introduce stricter limitations around some cybersecurity-related tasks.
The company says some coding, debugging, and technical requests could now automatically fall back to older systems like Opus 4.8 instead of relying entirely on Fable.
Bigger Questions for the AI Industry
The rapid suspension and equally rapid reversal have raised broader questions across the AI industry.
Some analysts worry that requiring government involvement before releasing powerful AI systems could create a major precedent for future model launches.
Reports suggest even OpenAI has faced increasing pressure to stagger access to future frontier systems.
Critics argue that heavy restrictions on American AI firms could unintentionally push users toward competing international systems.
Others believe closer oversight may become necessary as AI models grow increasingly capable.
