GES Denies Cancelling Free SHS Policy, Warns Against GH¢1,500 Chop Box Scam
The Ghana Education Service (GES) has dismissed reports circulating on social media claiming that the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy has been cancelled.
The reports also alleged that parents and guardians had been directed to pay a compulsory GH¢1,500 levy for chop boxes and trunks.
In a press release issued on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, and signed by the Head of Public Relations, Daniel Fenyi, the GES described the claims as false and urged the public to disregard them.
The Service clarified that neither the Free SHS policy has been cancelled nor has the Director-General issued any directive requiring parents or guardians to make payments for chop boxes, trunks or any other items.
According to the GES, the Director-General does not have the legal authority to single-handedly cancel a government policy.
The Service further warned parents, guardians and students against making payments to individuals who demand money under the guise of providing school supplies or implementing new directives.
GES encouraged the public to verify information through its official communication channels before acting on claims circulating on social media.
It also urged media organisations and social media users to exercise caution and avoid sharing unverified information that could create unnecessary fear and confusion among students and parents.
The GES reaffirmed that the reports about the cancellation of Free SHS and the alleged GH¢1,500 payment requirement are false.
