Kotoko Wrap Up Accra Camp, Set Sights on Hearts of Oak Clash
Asante Kotoko are heading back to Kumasi. The Porcupine Warriors have officially closed out their two-week training camp in Accra, and pre-season preparations now shift back home ahead of the new Ghana Premier League campaign.
The two weeks in the capital were far from a break. The technical team used the time to sharpen tactics, build up players’ fitness, and get the squad accustomed to how the new coaching setup wants them to play. A string of friendly matches gave everyone a chance to test that out in real game conditions.
Kotoko finished the camp on a high, beating Semper Fi 1-0. That result came on the back of another tight 1-0 win over Heart of Lions earlier in the trip.
Two clean wins in friendlies will lift spirits, but new head coach Eric Tinkler knows better than to get carried away. There’s still plenty of ground to cover before the season proper kicks off.
Tinkler took charge in July as part of a broader shake-up of Kotoko’s football operations. His task since then has been building a squad that can genuinely compete, after the club endured a season to forget in 2025/26.
He’s not doing it alone, either. The club brought in former Netherlands and Ajax goalkeeper Stanley Menzo as Director of Football, part of a wider push to put stronger structures in place around the team as Kotoko try to climb back to the top of Ghanaian football.
With the Accra camp behind them, Kotoko now return to Kumasi for a real test of where they stand. They’ll face fierce rivals Hearts of Oak in the Democracy Cup on Friday, August 28, at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.
For Tinkler, this is more than just another friendly. It’s a chance to run the rule over his players against serious opposition, try out different tactical setups, and pinpoint exactly what still needs fixing before the league begins.
Fans, too will get their first real look at what this new-look Kotoko side is capable of.
When the league itself gets underway, Kotoko will open their 2026/27 campaign away from home against newly promoted Debibi United. After the disappointment of last season, the hope inside the camp is that all this pre-season work translates into a fast start and a real shot at competing for honours this time around.
