Two-Year-Old Girl Dies in Domestic Fire at Cantonments
A two-year-old girl has died after being trapped in a domestic fire at Cantonments, near Susanna Lodge, in Accra.
The Ghana National Fire Service reported the incident, which occurred on Sunday, September 20, 2026. Despite efforts by fire personnel to bring the blaze under control, the young girl could not be saved. Her remains have since been handed over to the Cantonments Police.
This tragedy adds to a growing number of domestic fires recorded across Ghana this year a category that remains the most common type of fire outbreak nationwide.
According to the Ghana National Fire Service, the country recorded 2,055 fire outbreaks in the first quarter of 2026, actually a 10.02 percent decline from the 2,261 cases seen during the same period in 2025. Despite that overall drop, the financial cost of the damage still climbed, rising from GH¢167.4 million in 2025 to GH¢215.5 million this year.
Domestic fires specifically moved in the opposite direction of the general trend — up from 770 cases in the first quarter of 2025 to 881 in the same period this year, making them the leading category of fire outbreak. Commercial, bush, electrical, and vehicular fires followed behind.
Regionally, Greater Accra recorded the highest number of incidents with 377 cases, followed by Ashanti and Central regions.
The Fire Service points to a familiar set of causes behind most domestic and commercial fires electrical faults, negligence, and the misuse of household appliances. The Service continues to urge the public to take basic fire safety precautions seriously, particularly around electrical wiring and appliance use, to help prevent tragedies like this one.
