Akosombo Dam Breakthrough Brings Relief to Ghana’s Power Crisis

Accra, Ghana — 29 April 2026 |

Ghana has restored a fourth generating unit at the Akosombo Dam, in a late-night breakthrough expected to ease pressure on the country’s strained electricity supply.

The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, said the unit was successfully brought back online at 21:09 GMT on Tuesday, describing the development as “an encouraging step that strengthens power generation”.

Relief for strained power system

The move comes as Ghana’s power system has faced increased strain in recent weeks, with outages reported in parts of Accra and other areas due to technical faults and rising demand.

The Akosombo Dam, a key hydroelectric facility, supplies a significant share of the country’s electricity, making any increase in its operational capacity critical for stabilising supply.

Engineers credited for restoration

Jinapor praised the engineers and technical teams for restoring the unit, saying that the progress reflected their “dedication and expertise.”

Energy analysts say even incremental increases in output from the dam can help reduce pressure on the national grid, particularly during peak demand periods.

Impact on households and businesses

The additional unit is expected to improve supply reliability and reduce disruptions for households and businesses affected by recent power cuts.

Authorities have pointed to rising electricity consumption and infrastructure constraints, including overloaded transformers, as contributing factors behind intermittent outages.

While officials did not disclose how much additional capacity the restored unit will generate, analysts say the improvement could have a stabilising effect on the grid.

Context: Ongoing power challenges

Ghana has faced recurring power supply challenges in recent years, often linked to generation shortfalls and distribution inefficiencies.

The latest development is likely to provide short-term relief as authorities continue efforts to strengthen the country’s energy infrastructure and meet growing demand.
