Two Nigerians Arrested After Alleged Murder of Compatriot in Tamale, Police Say

ACCRA, Ghana — Police in northern Ghana have arrested two Nigerian nationals over the alleged murder of a fellow Nigerian whose body was discovered at a residence in Tamale, saying the suspects were intercepted while allegedly attempting to flee into neighbouring Togo.

The Northern Regional Police Command identified the suspects as Daniel Victor Eze and David Oko Ewa. Officers said they were arrested near Tatale in an intelligence-led operation conducted shortly after investigators began examining the killing of Nkemujika Uzorchuku Eze, 36.

The suspects remain in police custody and are expected to appear before court as investigations continue. Police have not publicly announced the charges that prosecutors intend to pursue. The case has attracted attention because it involves foreign nationals residing in Ghana and an alleged attempt to cross an international border shortly after the victim’s death. Authorities have not indicated whether any immigration-related investigations are underway.

According to the Northern Regional Police Command, officers received a report on Saturday, 11 July, that a man had been found lying motionless inside his bedroom at Sanzirigu, a suburb of Tamale. Investigators who visited the scene said the victim had suffered a deep cut to the forehead and that a towel had been placed in his mouth. The room had also been ransacked.

Crime scene investigators recovered a wooden pestle believed to have been used in the attack, together with other evidential materials for forensic examination. The victim was transported to the Tamale Teaching Hospital, where a medical officer confirmed his death before the body was transferred to the mortuary for preservation and autopsy. Police said intelligence gathered during the investigation led officers to intercept the two suspects at Tatale later the same day while they were allegedly attempting to cross into the Republic of Togo.

Police reconstruct events before arrest

Preliminary investigations indicate that the deceased lived in a three-bedroom apartment with his wife, Peace Uzorchuku, the two suspects and another Nigerian national identified as Godwin Nwafor. Police allege that during questioning the suspects admitted conspiring to kill the deceased following a dispute over proceeds from alleged internet fraud activities. Those allegations have not been tested in court, and the suspects remain presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

Police recover phones, laptops and jewellery

Investigators said searches conducted after the arrests led to the recovery of several items believed to have been removed from the deceased’s room. According to police, the recovered property includes multiple mobile phones, laptop computers, a tablet, jewellery, wristwatches, clothing, personal documents and other valuables. Officers said the items have been retained as exhibits and are expected to form part of the evidence in the investigation.

Photographs released by the Ghana Police Service show the suspects alongside some of the recovered property. Their faces have been obscured in the images published by police, reflecting the ongoing nature of the criminal proceedings.

The Northern Regional Police Command said investigations remain active and appealed to members of the public to provide credible information that could assist detectives. “The Northern Regional Police Command remains committed to ensuring that all persons involved are brought to justice,” the Police Service said in its statement.

Ghana and Togo are both members of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), whose free movement protocol allows citizens of member states to travel across much of the region under specified conditions.
