Asiedu Nketia’s tour fuels debate over future NDC flagbearer ambitions
Remarks by Majority Chief Whip Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor defending Johnson Asiedu Nketia’s nationwide “Thank You Tour” have intensified debate within Ghana’s ruling NDC over possible future flagbearer ambitions.
ACCRA, Ghana — Majority Chief Whip Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor has rejected suggestions that National Democratic Congress (NDC) Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia is using his nationwide “Thank You Tour” to position himself for a future presidential bid. The comments have generated discussion within political circles and on local media platforms over whether the nationwide constituency engagements by the veteran politician, popularly known as “General Mosquito”, could influence future succession politics within Ghana’s ruling party.
Neither Asiedu Nketia nor the NDC leadership has publicly announced any intention by the chairman to contest a future presidential primary. The NDC has also not opened any formal process to select a future presidential candidate following President John Mahama’s return to office after the 2024 general election.
Dafeamekpor dismisses campaign speculation
Speaking during an interview on PM Express, Dafeamekpor said the constituency visits formed part of the party’s post-election engagement strategy rather than an early campaign for the NDC flagbearer position. “I think the question you should ask the people is whether the chairman is going round claiming to be a flagbearer,” the South Dayi MP said.

According to him, the latest round of constituency visits began after the completion of ministerial appointments and regional tours following the NDC’s electoral victory. “The party ought to come to the grounds to come and show gratitude because they fought hard; we’ve been in opposition for eight years,” he said. Dafeamekpor added that the nationwide exercise had taken months because of the logistical scale involved in visiting constituencies across the country.
Earlier remarks renew scrutiny
Political discussion intensified after Dafeamekpor recalled messages delivered by Asiedu Nketia during similar tours conducted after the disputed 2020 election. “He wants to assure them that we had won elections, but we were cheated, so they should keep faith with us, and in 2024 he’s going to lead the team, and he will annihilate the NPP,” Dafeamekpor said while describing the chairman’s earlier engagements.
He nevertheless insisted the chairman’s current movements should not automatically be interpreted as a presidential ambition or early campaign strategy. “So his movement to go to the people, to the constituencies, and thank party people and stakeholders did not start yesterday,” he said.
Succession politics remain sensitive
Internal succession debates within Ghana’s major political parties often shape future electoral alliances, campaign strategies and leadership positioning years before official presidential primaries begin. Political analysts say nationwide tours by senior party figures frequently attract scrutiny because of Ghana’s highly competitive internal party politics.
Asiedu Nketia remains one of the NDC’s most influential strategists and grassroots organisers, having previously served as General Secretary before becoming National Chairman. The veteran politician has played a central role in the party’s electoral strategy and mobilisation efforts over the past two decades. No official timeline has been announced for any future NDC presidential contest.
