Second Victim Dies After Ho Bankoe Truck Crash as Safety Concerns Return to Galenkui Hill

A woman injured when a cargo truck crashed into roadside structures at Ho Bankoe has died in hospital, raising the death toll from the incident and renewing attention on a stretch of road that has witnessed several serious accidents in recent years.

HO, Ghana – A woman injured in a cargo truck crash at Ho Bankoe in Ghana‘s Volta Region has died while receiving treatment, increasing the death toll from the incident and renewing concerns about safety along the Galenkui Hill corridor.

The victim, identified in local reports as a 42-year-old woman, was among two people injured when a cargo truck reportedly veered off the road while descending the hill near Ho Bankoe before crashing into roadside structures close to the Ho Civic Centre. She later died at Ho Teaching Hospital.

A second injured victim, a 35-year-old man, remained under medical care, according to reports. Preliminary investigations cited by local media suggested the truck may have suffered brake failure before the crash, although authorities had not publicly released final findings at the time of reporting. Witnesses said the truck crossed into the roadside area before crashing into commercial structures, causing significant damage to property. Images from the scene showed the vehicle embedded in shops and market structures after the collision.

Focus Turns to Road Safety

While investigations into the latest crash continue, the incident has once again drawn attention to the Galenkui Hill stretch leading into Ho. The route serves as an important entry corridor into the Volta Regional capital and is frequently used by commercial vehicles transporting goods into and out of the city.

Road safety advocates have previously highlighted the challenges posed by steep descents, heavy vehicle traffic and the importance of maintaining braking systems on commercial vehicles operating along such routes. Authorities have not publicly linked the latest crash to broader road design or safety issues, and investigators have yet to release their final conclusions.

Previous Tragedies on the Corridor

The latest fatality has revived memories of one of the deadliest crashes recorded on the same corridor in recent years. In November 2023, at least 10 people were killed when a commercial minibus travelling downhill reportedly collided with a refuse compactor truck near the foot of Galenkui Hill. Emergency responders described extensive damage to both vehicles and transported multiple casualties to hospital.

Reports at the time also pointed to a possible brake-related failure, although official investigations examined several factors surrounding the crash. The accident shocked residents across the Volta Region and prompted renewed discussion about vehicle maintenance and safety enforcement on steep road sections.

Separate Fatal Crash in Ho

The latest Ho Bankoe incident is distinct from another fatal crash reported recently in Ho involving a Hyundai Mighty truck and a Bajaj tricycle near the Civic Centre traffic lights. In that separate collision, two people were killed and several others injured after the truck reportedly crossed into the opposite lane before crashing into nearby structures. Police investigations into that incident were also ongoing. Although unrelated, the two incidents have contributed to growing public concern about road safety within the municipality.

What Happens Next?

Investigators are expected to continue examining the circumstances surrounding the Ho Bankoe crash, including the mechanical condition of the truck and the sequence of events leading up to the collision. Authorities have not yet released a final accident report.

For residents and commuters who regularly use the Galenkui Hill corridor, the latest death is likely to intensify calls for stronger enforcement of vehicle safety regulations and greater attention to accident prevention measures on heavily travelled routes. Until official findings are released, questions surrounding the precise cause of the crash remain under investigation.
