NMTC Students Protest, Demand Removal of Principal as Police Arrest Demonstrators

Students of the Krobo Nursing and Midwifery Training College (NMTC) have staged a demonstration demanding the immediate removal of the school’s principal, accusing the administration of poor leadership, unfair treatment, and mismanagement.

The protest, which has dominated discussions on social media, saw hundreds of students marching with placards bearing messages such as “The Principal Must Go,” “No New Principal, No Class,” and “The Dean Must Go.”

According to the protesting students, their grievances go beyond concerns over school administration. They allege that trainees are being subjected to excessive manual labour despite paying school fees and other charges.

One student who spoke during the demonstration claimed students are often made to carry refuse over long distances to disposal sites because of inadequate waste management arrangements on campus.

“We paid our fees to come and study, not to be treated like labourers,” the student said, adding that the situation has negatively affected students’ welfare and academic life.

The protesters also accused the school administration of failing to release funds they claim are due to students, while raising concerns over poor sanitation and what they described as harsh treatment by management.

As tensions escalated, police officers were deployed to the campus to maintain order. Videos circulating on social media show officers attempting to disperse the demonstrators, while some students were reportedly arrested during the protest. However, authorities have not officially disclosed the number of arrests or the specific offences involved.

The demonstration has sparked widespread debate online, with many Ghanaians calling for the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education to investigate the allegations and engage the students to restore calm on campus.

As of the time of publication, the management of the Krobo Nursing and Midwifery Training College had not issued a detailed public response addressing the allegations raised by the students. Likewise, government authorities had not announced any decision regarding the students’ demand for the removal of the principal.

The situation remains tense as students insist they will not return to class until their concerns are addressed.
